Intercultural Competency Certificate Program
The “Intercultural Practicum”
Liberal Arts 291 (A) Credit/ No Credit
This intensive course of study prepares students for life in an increasing diverse society. Students are instructed in the areas of: conflict management, mediation, and small and large group facilitation. Additionally, students are challenged to identify their own biases and take personal responsibility for them. This program is designed for students who are interested in developing their human relations skills or those who would like to broaden their cultural understanding. Students who complete all requirements for the courses will earn the Intercultural Competency Certificate and a notation will be stamped on their transcript.
Four Fall Semester Workshop Classes:
Introduction to Interculturalism
Overview: Syllabus, Intercultural Competency Certificate Program, Intercultural Retreat, Intercultural Facilitations, Theories of Interculturalism, “Power, Privilege and Victim Status”
Discussion: “Why Interculturalism and how do we institutionalize it”
Sex and Gender Issues
Sexism, Feminism, Oppression “The Fairer Sex” Discussion “The Importance of Being an Ally”
Intercultural Retreat
Interculturalism on Campus
• Final class session review
• Overview of the spring semester
• Practical intercultural projects for the campus and the community
• Discussion
Readings
A minimum of selected readings will be assigned
Grading
The emphasis of this practicum is primarily in-class participation, workshop facilitation and discussion groups. To earn a grade of “credit” for the course, students will be required to attend all four classes, complete all assignments, and complete all field assignments.
