What is online renewal?
Instead of having to bring your books and media into the library to renew them, you can renew these items online using your name and the library number on the back of your OneCard.
What types of materials can I renew online?
Anything that you can renew in person in the library can be renewed online. You can renew books checked out from the main stacks or from LMU's off-site storage. Faculty or staff members who have checked out media items may renew those items online for one week, up to two times. (For media items, renewals are allowed only in the two days before their due date.)
Can I renew LINK+ books using online renewal?
For LINK+ books, renewing online is really a request to renew. This request will be processed by the LINK+ system and will not be immediate or automatic. Please be sure to check back a little later to see if the renewal you requested was approved.
What types of items are not renewable online?
Any item that cannot be renewed in person cannot be renewed online. This includes overdue items and items that have been placed on hold by another patron. Interlibrary loan items can only be renewed with the approval of the originating library. If you wish to renew an interlibrary loan item, please visit the Document Delivery office, or phone them at 310/338-7683.

How do I use online renewal? Where can I find this feature on the library's web site?
You can follow a direct link to My Library Record, or you can find this option from the library's home page at http://www.lmu.edu/library. On the left side of the home page, you will see a drop-down menu called Quick Links. Click on Quick Links, and from the menu that drops down, select My Library Record.
On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your name and the Library Number from the back of your OneCard. After you enter this information, click the button that reads Display Patron Record.
Now, you will get a screen that is divided into a top and bottom section. In the top section, you will find links indicating how many items you have checked out, and how many you have on hold. Click on these links to display lists of the items you have checked out or placed on hold.
When you are looking at a list of the items you have checked out, you will see two buttons on the bottom half of the screen: Renew All and Renew Selected Items. Either click Renew All, or check off the items you want to renew and click Renew Selected Items.
Can I use online renewal if I am off-campus?
Yes. The steps listed above to access your library record are the same for on- and off-campus users. You can renew your items from any computer with Internet access. Don’t forget that you’ll need the Library Number from the back of your OneCard to view your library record and renew your items online.

I clicked the "Renew" button when looking at my library record and it didn't work. Why didn't it renew my item?
There are a few reasons why you might not be able to use online renewal:
- If there is a hold on the item (another patron is waiting for it), you cannot renew online or in person. You must return the item by the due date.
- If your item is already overdue, you cannot use online renewal. You must come into the library, pay whatever fines you owe, and then you can renew it.
- Did you get a message reading too soon to renew? This means that the due date for the item is not close enough yet. This time period depends on the type of item you have checked out, and on your university status. For example, faculty can renew books up to 100 days before the due date, but CD-ROMs only 21 days before the due date. Students have shorter loan periods and will therefore have different too soon to renew periods. Try to renew your item closer to the due date.
- If you are a student, your patron record may have expired in our system. You may view your library record to check the expiration date. As a policy, all our student records expire at the end of each semester, and then are reactivated at the beginning of the next semester in which the student is enrolled. This policy ensures that all students return their items at the end of the semester. If you are a student needing to renew an item to use after the semester ends, please bring the item into the library, explain your situation, and we can discuss renewing the item for you.
- If you owe a significant amount of money to the library or you are blocked from renewing items in person, you will not be able to use online renewal. Please visit the library to resolve the situation.
- Renewal of a particular item may not be allowed at all. Examples of items that cannot be renewed are the Alcohol 101 CD and the daily newspapers you check out from the circulation desk.

How many times can I renew my item?
That depends on your university status (faculty, student, etc.), what type of item it is, and the regular location of the item in the library. Normally, students can renew their books twice. Faculty can usually renew media items twice. Call the library for information about your specific item.
When I renew my item, when will it be due?
It depends on your status at the university (faculty, student, etc.) and the type of item you are renewing. Most faculty books will be due at the end of the next academic year. CDs and DVDs will be due in a few hours; faculty and staff media renewals are for one week. Your renewal period will not necessarily be the same length as your original checkout period. Call the library for renewal information about your specific item.
I still have questions. Who can I contact in the library?
If you have questions about the online renewal process or are having trouble renewing your items online, call the Circulation Desk at 310/338-2788 for books, or the Media and Reserve Services Department at 310/338-3094, for media items.
