Magis

magispic

Magis is a latin word that means “more” or “greater good” and also serves as an acronym for…
Men Acting Genuinely In Service

Mission:

Magis is a male organization that is built on three essential principles: service, diversity, and spirituality.  Magis fulfills these standards by gathering a diverse group of men who are dedicated to service and are committed to their growth as a complete individual. The organization seeks to develop men who strive toward the Jesuit ideal of the magis: a thirst for the more, for the greater good, and for a life-long disposition to a fuller service of God and others following the Jesuit motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, "for the greater glory of God."

History:

In recent years the University has seen a steady increase in the amount of students applying for service organizations.  Unfortunately, due to limited openings, the five existing organizations have been unable to accommodate all interested students and have been forced to turn away many qualified applicants.  In May, 2003, Magis was founded in order to help address this issue by offering another alternative for males.  Magis was also established to help boost overall male involvement in service and leadership on campus.  To do this, Magis will attract a diverse group of men by creating a group dynamic that is has not been previously available to male students.

Services:

Verbum Dei High School: Members assist in after-shool tutoring and also implement programs and activities for the students.

Sage: Members assist in tutoring/ mentoring with the youth of Watts.

El Espejo:  Members assist in after-school tutoring/mentoring and also participate in programs and activities for the students.

Blessed Sacrament Church: Members participate in urban outreach and homelessness awareness at the Jesuit church in Hollywood.

Members are expected to complete various on-campus services.
Members are involved in issues concerning social justice domestically and internationally.

Explanation of Logo:

The three pillars represent the fundamental principles of Magis: service, diversity, and spirituality.  The larger pillar in the center represents service, our key aim.  In our eyes, diversity and spirituality are two necessary components that help complete a life of service.  Thus the two pillars adjacent to the center.
