How did you get this internship?
I found out about this internship from Don Ward, who works at LMU's Career Development Center. I’ve applied to this internship several times since my sophomore year. I got called in for an interview during the first semester of my junior year. Unfortunately, I did not get the internship, but at least I was on their radar. As I was getting ready to apply second semester of junior year, I got a call saying that I got the internship! I didn’t have to apply again or anything.
Why did you choose this company to intern at?
"The Ellen DeGeneres Show" internship was my ultimate dream internship because it is a successful talk show. In the future, I want to be a talk show host. This allowed me to see the organization and the structure of a successful talk show.
What were your general responsibilities?
As an intern, we rotate to different departments such as audience, research, human interest, production, and web. In the audience department, I was responsible for making sure the audience members were still coming to the show and to ask if they have any questions. In the research department, my job was looking at magazine articles for possible questions for future guests. In human interest, I was responsible taking care of the non-famous people who are put on the show. In production, my duty was to make runs to different places around the lot. For the web, my role was to delete all the negative comments on the show’s Youtube page.
What was the best part of your internship?
The people are the best part of my internship! Everybody is really nice and does not treat you like an "intern." They always say, "Thank You," after every task you do and they say again before I leave for the day! They treat interns with respect and make us feel like we matter.
Do you recommend other students getting an internship? Why?
I highly recommend this internship to other students because it is a family-friendly environment. I choked up saying goodbye to people! Interns don’t just get coffee for people. They can pitch things to the show. When I was going through Fan Mail, I read funny police reports that eventually got onto the show!
What do you plan to do after college?
In the near future, I would like to produce my own talk show! I have already interviewed Quest Crew, winners of America’s Best Dance Crew, and some members of the Black Eyed Peas. This internship gave me the organizational insight on what goes into a successful talk show. Also, this was a good internship for me because it was my dream internship. Now that I have reached it, I believe that I can do anything!
