Course Description (principal topics covered):
This is a survey course of German literature from the beginnings of German literature until the present. For the most part, we will be using a workbook on German literature, which will help us get some insight into the development of German literature. We will read short texts and excerpts typical of their time or a particular author in order to deduce the major characteristics of different literary epochs from them. The literary epochs will also be discussed in relation to other artistic achievements and the historical context. Multi-media presentations will help us get a feeling for the particular time periods.
Required Texts/References
  • Baumann, Barbara, Oberle, Brigitta: Deutsche Literatur in Epochen. Max Hueber, 1996.
  • Baumann, Barbara, Oberle, Brigitta: Deutsche Literatur in Epochen. Arbeitsaufgaben. Max Hueber, 1988.
