An 18-month program designed to provide a quality education to individuals wishing to become certified as an Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) counselor. Courses meet the education requirements to take the IC&RC given by the California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CCBADC). This program is approved by CFAAP/CAADAC and it is consistent with the requirements for certification by CAADAC's certification organization the CCBADC.
The pass rate of LMU Extension students when taking the IC&RC exam is among the highest in the State of California. For the June and December 2009 and the March 2010 IC&RC exam, 100% of the LMU students taking the exam passed.
Students taking the recommended number of courses (see Program Description) can anticipate completing the majority of their courses within 12 months with their Supervised Practicum filling up the remainder of the 18 months.

Professional enrichment courses for alcohol and drug counselors, licensed mental health professionals, medical physicians, teachers, and other health care specialists. The Alcohol and Drug Counselor classes offered by LMU, Extension are highly valuable to individuals wishing to work in hospitals, drug courts, treatment or rehabilitation centers, sobriety housing, community based organizations, mental health establishments, schools, government agencies and private practice substance abuse treatment.
Mental health professionals and registered nurses may take the classes to satisfy continuing education requirements. Please contact acc@lmu.edu for the continuing education approval identification numbers.
Individuals who are not licensed mental health professionals, providing counseling in alcohol and other drug (AOD) recovery and treatment programs are required by law to be certified. According to the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 9, Division 4, Chapter 8. require non-licensed or non-certified individuals providing counseling services in an AOD program be registered to obtain certification as an AOD counselor by one of the approved certifying organizations (CCR, Section 13035(f)). Registrants are required to complete certification as an AOD counselor within five years from the date of registration (CCR, Section 13035(f)(1)).
Admission Requirements:
Admission into the certificate program requires: A completed application, completion of high school or GED, and attendance at an Information Meeting. A program application and/or enrollment forms can be emailed to you by providing your email address to acc@lmu.edu.
Information About the Current Semester:
The courses for the Spring 2012 semester start on 1/17/12. The first course a new student can attend starts on 1/30/12. To see the courses offered during the spring 2012 semester please click here.
Courses are normally scheduled Monday through Thursday from 7:15 pm to 9:45 pm. Students planning to complete the program in 18 months should anticipate attending courses three nights per week. The nights scheduled for courses will change with each semester. Occasionally courses are scheduled on Saturdays during daytime hours. All courses are held on the Loyola Marymount University campus.

A reservation is not needed to attend a meeting. It is okay to simply show up. The length of the meetings normally run approximately one and a half hours.
Instructions to the meeting:
From Lincoln Blvd, turn onto LMU Drive. Please stop at the security booth and obtain a free parking permit and to obtain instructions to the University Hall parking lot. Parking is underground; enter at level P2/P3 (Student Parking). Once in the underground parking lot, find elevator lobby in parking section 2C (or 3C). Take the elevator up to the ground (G) level. When you exit the elevator, immediately turn right (do not go straight ahead) into a silver door marked “1762-1859.” Turn right and right again to walk down the corridor. Room 1878 is near the end of the long corridor.
