Starting a new college semester is stressful enough, but now warnings about the flu are dominating the news. Loyola Marymount University recognizes the vulnerability our students face with this virus and is taking precautions to prevent its spread.

The experts agree that the surest way to prevent outbreaks is for students to be conscious of their own situation and hygiene. Being prepared, in situations such as this, is the best medicine. LMU’s Student Health Center recommends a checklist of items for our students including: medicine for a fever; a thermometer; sports drinks containing electrolytes; tissues; ear loop procedure masks, which are available at most drugstores; and disinfectant wipes. Personal measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, avoiding touching your own eyes, nose or mouth, and practicing cough etiquette by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Still, our conscious efforts to remain clear of the flu virus may not be enough.  Students are strongly urged to respond to the first sign of flu symptoms, such as fever, cough, headache, runny nose, sore throat and muscle aches. Students are instructed to “self-isolate” by staying in their room and treating the symptoms. If the illness persists for 24 hours, it will be advisable to seek medical assistance or return home if possible.

Also, it is very important to contact each professor by phone or e-mail. They will give guidance on completing assignments and maintaining good standing in classes.

Most students who contract the H1N1 flu, or a flu-like virus, won’t need to seek medical assistance. Still, the university stays current with health advisories from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
