Family of Schools API Scores Increase

Six of the seven Westchester schools in Loyola Marymount University’s Family of Schools increased their scores on the state Academic Performance Index test from last year.

Kentwood Elementary School had the largest increase, jumping 54 points from 763 to 817; Orville Wright Middle School increased 30 points from 708 to 738; and Westchester High School climbed 14 points from 589 to 603. Cowan Elementary School’s score rose four points, to 825 from 821; Paseo del Rey Elementary School increased 27 points, to 836 from 809; and Westport Heights Elementary school climbed 19 points, to 802 from 783. Only Loyola Village Elementary School’s score declined, falling eight points from 806 to 798.

“We’re pleased with the growth of all our schools and happy with the progress that has been made,” said Steve Rochelle, director of learning and leadership for the Family of Schools. “We recognize there are areas in our sub-group sets that must improve in order to fulfill our mission of providing an excellent education for all students.”

Drew Furedi, executive director of the LMU Family of Schools added, “We are so proud of our Family of Schools and the work they have done with their students. There is much work to be done, but we’re making the strides necessary for future success.”

The API scale ranges from 200 to 1,000; the statewide target is 800. The score is one of several used to measure a school’s progress toward federal goals spelled out in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

The trend in the Westchester-area is consistent with the overall performance of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which climbed 21 points this year, based on results of the 2008 Accountability Progress Report released by the state Department of Education.
