PeaceJam Conference Comes to LMU

LMU is proud to host the PeaceJam Global Call to Action Conference on Sept. 11-13, 2008. The conference brings nearly 2,000 young people, ages 14-25, from the United States and around the world to spend the weekend with seven Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Desmond Tutu (1984),Rigoberta Menchú Tum (1992), Jody Williams (1997), Betty Williams (1977), Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (1980), Jose Ramos Horta (1996), and Shirin Ebadi (2003).

During the conference the laureates will launch a “Global Call to Action,” asking young people around the world to join them in performing one-billion simple acts of peace within the next ten years. By performing these acts of peace, PeaceJam organizers say they hope to relieve suffering and help humanity in many parts of the world.

Two thousand young PeaceJam activists from across the United States and 25 different countries will work side-by-side with the Nobel laureates for three days as they launch this international campaign.

The PeaceJam conference is a closed event—the audience is limited solely to registered youth, their youth workers/chaperones and the 240 LMU students who attend 14 hours of training to enable them to lead PeaceJam family groups throughout the conference (these students have already been selected).

A campus talk will be held in Gersten Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are limited to LMU faculty, staff and students. For tickets or more information, please contact the Center for Service and Action at 310.338.2959 or peacejamLMU@gmail.com.

MEDIA: Media coverage is available at each event of the conference. For access to the event, please contact Christine Nangle, assistant Director of Communications and Media, at 310.338.2389 or cnangle@lmu.edu.
