Criminal Justice Addictions Professional

Three-strikes sentencing and prison overcrowding, coupled with new trends in law enforcement, corrections, and a renewed emphasis on rehabilitation, is now compelling the Criminal Justice system to divert more offenders into supervised treatment settings as an alternative to incarceration. Our Criminal Justice Addictions Professional Certificate places specific accent on the skills, knowledge base, and competencies necessary to work with this unique population.

CJAX 800 Criminal Justice Systems and Processes
Units: 4.5 | Hours: 45
Course Description: A companion to Dynamics of Addiction and Criminal Behavior (CJAX 800.01), this course is designed as an advanced adjunct for those currently holding, or working towards, a separate Certification or equivalent competency in Addiction Counseling or Alcohol and Other Drug Studies. This 15-week, 45-hour course is an intensive survey of relevant constitutional law, federal and state regulations, and their exclusions. Specific areas of focus will include: Criminal Justice Theories, Overview of Correctional Settings, Juvenile and Criminal Justice Continuum, Court Roles (Drug Court, et. al.), Participating in a Judicial/Clinical/Correctional Team, Models of Addiction Treatment Settings, and Legal Overview.

CJAX 801 Dynamics of Addiction and Criminal Behavior
Units: 4.5 | Hours: 45
Course Description: Designed as an advanced adjunct for those currently holding, or working towards, a separate Certification or equivalent competency in Addiction Counseling or Alcohol and Other Drug Studies. This 15-week, 45-hour course will survey criminal behavior from sociological, psychological, biological, and biochemical perspectives, providing platform skills for knowledge application, analysis, and extended substance abuse/dependence interventions in the criminal justice setting. Specific areas of focus will include: Theories of Criminal Behavior, Human Growth and Development, Pharmacology, and Addiction and Related Theories.

CJAX 802 Counseling, Supervision, and Monitoring in the Criminal Justice Setting
Units: 3 | Hours: 30
Course Description: This course is designed as an advanced adjunct for those currently holding, or working towards, a separate Certification or equivalent competency in Addiction Counseling or Alcohol and Other Drug Studies. This 10-week, 30-hour course reviews and reframes core competencies in Counseling, Case Management, and Supervision practice within the context of the Criminal Justice/Corrections setting. Specific areas of focus will include: Integration of the Clinical Care Continuum with the Correctional Milieu, Interpretation of Federal, State, and Agency Regulations, Client Accountability, Public Safety, Coordination of Services (Pre & Post Parole), Assessment and Referral, and Methods and Models of the Therapeutic Alliance within the Criminal Justice Setting. Prerequisite: Prior completion of at least one CJAX 800-series Criminal Justice course.
