MORE INFORMATION: On September 11-13, 2008, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and six other leading Nobel Peace Prize winners will launch one of the most ambitious youth movements of all time – the “Global Call to Action.” This decade long campaign will join youth and Nobel Peace Laureates in tackling the toughest issues facing our world today. From ending racism and hate, stopping the spread of global disease, securing rights for women and children, and restoring the environment, to breaking the cycle of violence in our own communities, the enormity of the campaign is contained in its audacious goal – 1 Billion “Global Call to Action” projects to be accomplished within ten years. Three thousand committed young PeaceJam leaders from across the USA and around the world will work side-by-side with the Nobel Laureates for three days as they launch this international campaign. Penguin Books will release the official handbook for the campaign, “PeaceJam: A Billion Simple Acts of Peace,” at the event, and the PeaceJam Foundation will launch a new, highly interactive “Global Call to Action” Web site to track the progress of the campaign. The Pearson Foundation will announce an annual “Global Call to Action” challenge to identify the very best projects completed each year of the campaign, and a PBS film crew will be on site to complete filming of the companion television series, which will run in the spring of 2009. The PeaceJam Foundation has been nominated for the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize for its work in creating the “Global Call to Action” campaign.

The seven Nobel Peace Prize winners in attendance for this historic event will be Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Jody Williams, President Jose Ramos-Horta, Betty Williams, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, and Shirin Ebadi.
