John C. Hueston, lead prosecutor in the Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling trials following the 2001 Enron bankruptcy filing and a member of the Enron Task Force, will speak at Loyola Marymount University’s College of Business Administration at 7 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Hueston’s presentation, “A Perfect Storm of Investigation and Governance Failures: Why Enron Failed and Why Its Failure is Relevant Today”, is part of the Center for Accounting Ethics, Governance, and the Public Interest’s Distinguished Speaker Series.
“I am thrilled Mr. Hueston has agreed to participate in our speaker series,” said Larry Kalbers, the R. Chad Dreier Chair in Accounting and Director of the Center for Accounting Ethics, Governance, and the Public Interest. “His relentless pursuit of justice in the Lay and Skilling trials makes him a great role model for our students. Mr. Hueston’s knowledge and opinions about the failure of Enron and its continuing importance will give our audience unique insights into the global corporate governance and auditing reforms that are still taking place.”
Hueston, who has never lost a trial, is a litigation partner at Irell & Manella LLP. He also devotes a substantial part of his practice to internal investigations, corporate crisis management and white collar criminal defense. He has extensive jury trial experience and has been selected to serve as lead trial counsel by Fortune 500 companies and by governments in a variety of cases, including shareholder class action cases, patent litigation cases, trademark infringement cases, environmental cases, and cases alleging unfair business practices.
During the Kenneth Lay trial, the Los Angeles Times described Hueston’s cross-examination of Lay as “devastating” while The Associated Press called him “the perfect David to Lay’s Goliath.” Last year California Lawyer Magazine named him “California Attorney of the Year” while The American Lawyer magazine recognized him as one of the country’s “Fab Fifty” young litigators. He was also honored by Fortune magazine by choosing him as one of “25 People Who Shaped the Face of Business in 2006.” Hueston was recently recognized by Chambers & Partners as a leading litigation attorney for white-collar crime & government investigations in its 2008 Chambers USA Leading Lawyers for Business Guide.
