Course Checklist

Here are five key items to have in order prior to your first day in the classroom:

  • Books - Textbook order forms are distributed by the Bookstore and are available from each department's administrative assistant. To construct a customized course packet, contact Campus Graphics at (310)338-2730 or drop by their office on the west end of P2 in University Hall.
  • Class Roster - Access your Class Roster through the University's PROWL system online. PROWL offers several screens for faculty use that can display class rosters, student transcripts and student schedules for the term. To log into PROWL, you must obtain an ID number and PIN (obtained at PROWL training session).
  • Classrooms & Schedule Information - Each faculty member should identify the technology needed and request classrooms that contain the required technology or have the capacity to add the technology; learn to use the technology properly; and leave the room at the class ending time with a clean board and room. Class times are noted in the Schedule of Classes. Classes are expected to meet for the entire period for every session including the first class period. During Finals, faculty must adhere to the assigned times in The Final Exam schedule. To deviate is likely to create conflicts for students with exam times in other courses.
  • Office Hours - Faculty are expected to keep two hours of office hours per week for each class taught. Faculty are asked to schedule and distribute the hours for the convenience of students who generally have four other classes and often work part-time. When scheduling office hours immediately before and after class, allow at least 10 minutes to travel to and from the classroom. It is recommended to schedule late afternoon or evening office hours if teaching night classes. Office hours should be posted on the office door and noted on the syllabus. Faculty are expected to be on campus a minimum of three full days or 24 hours a week. Should you need to cancel office hours on a particular day, please post a notice on the office door or ask the department's administrative assistant to do so.
  • Syllabus - A syllubus is a faculty member's first opportunity to describe the role and responsibilities that the students will have in a course. A carefully developed syllabus can actively support their learning and success in the course. Click here for helpful tips on creating a course syllabus.
