Men's Water Polo
The Lions won their fifth Western Water Polo Association title in
seven years with a dramatic, come-from-behind, 7-6 win over the
University of California, Davis in the conference championship in
November. The victory placed them in the NCAA Men's Water Polo
Championship, where they finished fourth, with a final ranking of 10th
in the nation. They ended the season with a 13-17 record.
Junior Mark Milovic, with 28 goals, was named a first-team All-WWPA
selection. Goalie Andy Stevens, the WWPA Newcomer of the Year, was
ranked seventh in the nation with 274 saves. Freshman Tibor Forai led
the team in goals with 49, while earning second-team All-WWPA honors.
He was MVP of the WWPA tournament.
Cross Country
The women harriers finished 15th and the men 16th in the NCAA West
Regional tournament. Senior Laura Mickelson also finished 15th
individually and won all-region honors for the second year in a row.
Her individual performance earned her a second consecutive invitation
to the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Championship
in November. She finished 61st in the 6K race.
"Our goal was a top-15 finish on both sides. We were able to achieve
that on the women's side where we finished in the top 15 for the third
straight year, even as the region has gotten tougher," said Head Coach
Scott Guerrero. The 16th place finish for the men was the best in
program history.
Volleyball
The Lions volleyball team finished with a 16-13 record and took
fourth place in the West Coast Conference. Four players were named to
All-WCC teams. Senior Heather Hughes and junior Emily Day each earned
first-team selections while freshmen Renee Horton and Whitney Leonard
earned spots on the All-Freshmen team. It was Hughes' third straight
first-team selection. In January 2008, she was one of 10 players
invited to train with the national women's volleyball team at the U.S.
Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. She will compete for
a spot on Team USA this coming summer.
Men's Soccer
Three players received All-West Coast Conference recognition at the
end of the season. Senior Adam Sloustcher was a first-team selection
while freshman Rafael Baca was named to the All-Freshman Team. Senior
Tyler Mehl rounded out the Lion honorees with a place on the Honorable
Mention list. The Lions finished the season with a 3-16-1 record.
Senior midfielder Trini Gomez, who was a 2007 co-captain, was named to
the Lowe's Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for
Staying in School) All-Senior All-America First Team.
Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team completed an excellent 2007 season under
first-year head coach Joe Mallia. The Lions were 12-6-1 overall and
tied for third in the conference with a 4-3-0 mark. A season highlight
was the team's nine-game winning streak, a new LMU record.
At season's end, a school-record seven Lions were named to All-West
Coast Conference teams, including senior goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek and
senior forward Jamie Bell. They earned All-WCC first-team honors; it
was the second in a row for Slovek. She led the WCC in shutouts with
10. Bell led the Lions with eight goals, which was second highest in
the WCC.
