A Unique Mother's Day

Cory and Ashley Shultz had the unique opportunity to share their graduation with their mother, Julie, who also received her diploma. Cory, 24, received his degree in finance, Ashley, 22, got hers in English and their mother, 47, earned her degree in sociology.

Their timing was out of pure coincidence as they each came to the end of their undergraduate education at the same time. “It just worked out that we were all going to walk together,” Cory said. Cory and Ashley have completed their education within the standard time frame, while their mother took 10 years to complete hers.

Westchester residents, the Schultz family has remained local throughout their entire education. Cory and Ashley attended all local schools and decided to continue through with LMU. They both lived at home while attending school. “We really depended on each other,” Ashley said of the closeness of the family.

Julie works at LMU as the executive assistant to the chief financial officer. Throughout her 10 years of education, Julie was limited in the number of courses she could take per semester, but is thrilled to finally receive her degree. “I've always wanted my degree,” said Julie, noting that the dream was postponed as she got married and had children at a young age. “It started out like a hobby and turned into a goal. It's an honor to be able to graduate with my kids.”

While they rarely interacted with one another on campus, Ashley and Julie did get to share in an acting class together. The students really enjoyed watching the mother and daughter interact within the classroom.

Following graduation, Cory and Ashley Schultz each have plans to attend graduate school and Julie will continue with her job at the university. Cory has expressed an interest in owning a business one day and Ashley is considering becoming an English professor.

After the ceremony, the family hosted about 25 of their closest relatives and friends to celebrate this unique milestone. “It's kind of a one-shot deal,” said Ashley, referring to the family in attendance. “It'll be a lot of fun,” her brother added.
