CASTL Carnegie Affiliates Program
Carnegie Foundation Names LMU Coordinating Institution of the Carnegie Affiliates to the Institutional Leadership Program
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has named Loyola Marymount University as the coordinating institution for the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Affiliates Program, which is an ongoing initiative to encourage and support institutions in the early stages of their commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Institutions that apply to the CASTL Affiliate program are those that are prepared to make a commitment to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) by exploring the place of such work in their settings, and undertaking activities that provide support and recognition for ongoing inquiry into evidence-based improvement of student learning. Included in the group of 14 CASTL Affiliates are Purdue University, Park University, Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, University of Manitoba, Maryville University, several others and one national center for science and civic engagement.
As coordinating institution LMU has hosted videoconference meetings of the Affiliates and organized a get-together at the Fall 2007 POD Network Conference. Planning is in progress for a meeting of the Affiliates at the 2008 ISSOTL Conference.
LMU's participation in this program will be guided by a team of four members who will be responsible for coordinating local efforts and communicating with the Carnegie Foundation. LMU’s team members are: Joe Hellige, Vice President for Research and Graduate Education, Alicia Partnoy, Associate Professor and Chair of Modern Languages, Stephanie August Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Kala Seal Professor of Finance-CIS, and Jackie Dewar (team leader), Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Professor of Mathematics.
