Stephen Mallory White Papers. CSLA-8

THE THOMAS AND DOROTHY LEAVEY CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF LOS ANGELES RESEARCH COLLECTION

STEPHEN MALLORY WHITE PAPERS, 1871-1936 (CSLA-8)

Stephen Mallory White, born in San Francisco in 1853, received his law degree from Santa Clara College in 1871. In 1874 he moved to Los Angeles, where he practiced law and became involved in Democratic party politics.

White married Hortense Sacriste in 1883 and, that same year, started a one-year term as District Attorney. Three years later, White became a state Senator representing the district in and around Los Angeles. He won a seat in the United States Senate in 1893 and saw his term through to 1899. White died in 1902, at the age of 48.

The bulk of the Stephen M. White Papers pertains to White's career as an attorney. There is also information about his family (in his letters to his wife Hortense) and a small amount of information pertaining to his political career.

The Stephen Mallory White Papers consists of eight series. The Series Descriptions page has information on each of the series. For a folder-level list of the collection, see the Box and Folder Lists.
