Vision
As an integral part of a comprehensive Catholic university, LMU's Seaver College of Science and Engineering is committed to providing innovative, student-centered educational and research opportunities in an intellectually vibrant and socially just environment.

Mission
Seaver College is dedicated to providing outstanding educational opportunities in science, engineering and mathematics in a mentoring environment to an increasingly diverse student body. The college emphasizes development of the whole person through its focus on ethical behavior and service to society.

Values
Seaver College defines itself through its commitment to serving students. This commitment is seen through focused teaching, hands-on mentoring, and true dedication to all students. The college values a diverse population – both in its students and faculty. The Jesuit principle of educating the whole person invites a stimulating campus environment that enhances creativity and thought, inspiring the best in scientific innovation and study.

To fulfill its mission and achieve its vision, the Seaver College of Science and Engineering is committed to these five goals:

Goal 1:  Provide a high-quality, innovative educational experience for students with a focus on personal growth, long-term success, and measurable student learning outcomes.

Goal 2:  Identify, develop, and promote strategic areas of research with correlating full-time graduate programs.

Goal 3:  Recruit, support, and retain a diverse community of talented faculty who are dedicated to teaching, scholarship and the mission of LMU.

Goal 4:  Develop and maintain the infrastructure, facilities, and staffing necessary to achieve the college’s vision and mission.

Goal 5:  Promote an ethical, scholarly environment with a strong sense of community and collegiality among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.


Goal 1:  Provide a high-quality, innovative educational experience for students with a focus on personal growth, long-term success, and measurable learning outcomes.

Action 1.1  Establish a rotation of program reviews and revisions with the goal of implementing innovative, student-centered programs with research, internship, study abroad, and other experiential education opportunities.

Action 1.2  Support faculty who engage in the development of innovative courses and programs incorporating active student learning strategies with measurable learning outcomes.

Action 1.3  Establish a curriculum committee to oversee courses that touch on multiple disciplines.

Action 1.4  Enhance and better coordinate academic advising, career counseling, mentoring activities, tutoring, and other support services for students.

Action 1.5  Coordinate with the Division of Student Affairs those activities that complement the academic programs and contribute to the education of the whole person.

Goal 2:  Identify, develop, and promote strategic areas of research with correlating full-time graduate programs.

Action 2.1  Develop an effective support mechanism for faculty involved in disciplinary and interdisciplinary research.

Action 2.2  Identify, promote, and develop two or three interdisciplinary research centers which have the potential for securing external funding.

Action 2.3  Identify, develop, and promote targeted full-time graduate programs.

Goal 3:  Recruit, support, and retain a diverse community of talented faculty who are dedicated to teaching, scholarship and the mission of LMU.

Action 3.1  Significantly improve start-up packages that include equipment, laboratory space, summer salary, and travel.

Action 3.2  Significantly increase efforts to recruit a diverse faculty.

Action 3.3  Work to improve faculty-development opportunities within the College.

Action 3.4  Develop clear guidelines for rank and tenure. Articulate teaching, scholarship, and service expectations for all faculty.

Action 3.5  Work with other units on campus to develop better methods of assessing and balancing faculty workloads and evaluating performance for merit-based pay increases.

Goal 4:  Develop and maintain the infrastructure, facilities, and staffing necessary to achieve the college’s vision and mission.

Action 4.1  Enhance and develop opportunities for professional staff development.

Action 4.2  Perform a comprehension space and facilities study in view of the capital campaign and the goals of this strategic plan.

Action 4.3  Develop goals and strategies within the capital campaign to identify, solicit, and secure funds for a new building for Seaver College.

Action 4.4  Review the administrative structure of the College and modify it where necessary to achieve the goals of this strategic plan.

Action 4.5  Pursue outside funding opportunities to acquire equipment.

Goal 5:  Promote an ethical, scholarly environment with a strong sense of community and collegiality among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Action 5.1  Support and promote a college-wide lecture series involving students, faculty, alumni, and external speakers.

Action 5.2  Develop an annual symposium of student work.
