Charles Luckman Papers: Series 14

THE THOMAS AND DOROTHY LEAVEY CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF LOS ANGELES RESEARCH COLLECTION

CHARLES LUCKMAN PAPERS, 1908-2000 (CSLA-34)

SERIES 14: Citizens Food Committee

Series Size: 2 archival document boxes, 1 oversize box, 1 scrapbook

At the request of President Harry S. Truman in 1947, Charles Luckman served as chair of the twenty-six member “Citizens’ Food Committee,” whose charge was to devise strategies to save American grain for shipment to war-desolated Europe. The committee only lasted two months, ineffectual in its effort to develop voluntary rationing, but it was the forerunner of Truman’s great foreign policy achievement, the Marshall Plan. This series contains some Charles Luckman correspondence concerning his work as chair; other materials include committee budgets, the final report of the committee, photographs, and newspaper articles. All materials date from 1947.
