University Honors Program

University Honors Program

The problems facing the 21st century will not be solved by any one person or one discipline.  Instead, we will need a collaborative, interdisciplinary community of scholars.  These scholars will be masters of their respective disciplines, yet willing and able to communicate across disciplinary lines in a variety of languages while using a variety of techniques.

Do you want to be a member of that community?

If your answer is YES, there's a great place for you here at Loyola Marymount University - a place where you can develop your mind across disciplines in a collaborative and innovative way.

The University Honors Program is the jewel in the crown of academic programs at Loyola Marymount University. It’s for students who value and want to be challenged by an exceptional education, who want to study a variety of subjects intensively. The program creates and supports an academic environment of intellectual adventure and provides a carefully integrated and demanding curriculum.

Honors classes are not "harder and more" of what everyone else is doing. They are an exciting and qualitatively different intellectual experience. The LMU Honors program is a community of scholars dedicated to the delight of intellectual inquiry, to the joy of reflecting on great ideas and accomplishing creative projects. Honors education is not about the what of learning; it's about the joy of seeing things in new ways.

The LMU Honors Program takes advantage of its freedom to offer interdisciplinary seminars from the first semester. Classes are smaller. Interaction with faculty is enhanced. Projects are more exciting, more intensive and demanding. And the rewards are great: High academic achievement. An honors degree for your transcript. Public recognition at commencement. And the satisfaction that you faced the challenge. Because you were ready for it.

Since the entire Honors Program is approximately 150 students total (that's about 30-40 students per year), we are able to assist you with this great challenge every step of the way.  Here's how:

  • Your Honors Program courses are smaller than regular core courses (about 15 in each class).
  • You'll have dedicated Honors Program advisors and counselors.
  • We help place you with faculty mentors and directors in order for you to research, present at national conferences, and publish your work.
  • We help you pursue and capture scholarships, graduate school placement, internships, awards, grants and study abroad opportunities.
  • Unique housing opportunities with Honors roommates, an Honors Commons with computers, a designated classroom and an available outdoor courtyard for social gatherings.
  • Honors students receive priority registration every semester. They can enroll in more than 18 units each semester.
  • Honors Program students often receive Trustee or Presidential Scholarships in addition to other financial aid.
  • Honors Research Fellows Program:  In addition to all these aspects of the program, each year we offer a limited number of Honors Research Fellowships ($5000 award) for summer research, study and travel anywhere in the world. Freshman, Sophomore and Junior students are eligible to submit grant proposals for these competitive awards.
  • Because of the intensity of the Honors Program, you'll build relationships with students, professors and advisors that most likely are stronger than you would build without the benefit of the program.
  • We also host frequent events, socials, dinners with professors, guest speakers, and graduate school information sessions.
  • Join Lawton's Literati: an Honors book group with the President of LMU.
  • Being an Honors student builds bridges to leadership opportunities within the university and the Los Angeles community.
