LMU Student-Run Newspaper Wins National Journalism Award

Los Angeles Loyolan Honored with Pacemaker Award.

Los Angeles, Oct. 31, 2007 – The Los Angeles Loyolan, the student-run newspaper at Loyola Marymount University, won a 2007 Newspaper Pacemaker award for exceptional college journalism. The award was presented Oct. 27 at the National College Media Conference held in Washington, D.C.

It is believed to be the first time in the newspaper’s 86-year history that it won the national honor, which is presented by the Associated College Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation in recognition of general excellence and outstanding achievement by a college newspaper. The Loyolan was a Pacemaker finalist is 2005.

The Loyolan won the Pacemaker in the four-year non-daily category based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics during the 2006-07 academic year.

“I am thrilled for the Loyolan students who work so hard to produce a quality college newspaper for the LMU community,” said Tom Nelson, the university’s director of Student Media and adviser to the Loyolan. “The 2006-07 Loyolan staff, led by Natalie Nordseth, put an incredible amount of effort into the paper, and this award serves to validate their good work, which I am happy to say has continued on into the current year.”

“By providing an environment where students themselves are responsible and, ultimately accountable for the Loyolan’s content, the Division of Student Affairs and the university provide students a fantastic co-curricular educational opportunity," Nelson said.

There were 20 other winners in various categories of the 2007 Newspaper Pacemaker, including the Harvard Crimson (Harvard University), the Maneater (University of Missouri) and the Daily Pennsylvanian (University of Pennsylvania). A complete list of winners and finalists is available at:

The Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation have co-sponsored the Newspaper Pacemaker competition since 1971. ACP began the awards in 1927.
