FIFTY PERCENT OF Los Angeles residents responding to a poll say they believe that race riots similar to those that left 52 people dead in 1992 are likely in the next five years. Pessimism varies by race and ethnicity in the survey of 1,549 residents by Loyola Marymount University's Center for the Study of Los Angeles. Among blacks, 55% predicted more rioting, compared with 49% of Asians, 43% of whites and 43% of Latinos. However, 59% of all those surveyed said the city has made progress since the violence 10 years ago this month. The survey has a margin of error of +/--2.5 percentage points. — Martin Kasindorf
