A poll of 300 absentee voters showed 52 percent voted yes on the recall, while 41 percent voted against ousting Gov. Gray Davis, Loyola Marymount researchers said today.
In the race for a successor, Arnold Schwarzenegger was leading the absentee pack with 35 percent of the vote, while 25 percent of those polled said they voted for Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock won the vote of 10 percent of those polled.
Among Democrats surveyed, 22 percent voted yes on the recall, researchers said.
An overwhelming share of Republicans -- 85 percent -- voted to dump Davis.
When it came to picking a potential successor, 47 percent of the Democratic voters polled chose Bustamante. Schwarzenegger and McClintock each received 10 percent of the Democratic vote.
Most Republicans polled cast their vote for Schwarzenegger, who carried the votes of 64 percent.
Seven percent of the 300 surveyed did not vote on a replacement for Davis, researchers said.
When it came to Proposition 54, which would bar the state from collecting racial data, 51 percent of the absentee voters surveyed opposed the initiative. Seventeen percent of those surveyed did not remember how they voted on the proposition.
The survey was conducted by Loyola Marymount University's Center for the Study of Los Angeles. Participants were selected at random, and the share of Republicans and Democrats polled was similar to the breakdown of registered voters statewide, researchers said.
Loyola Marymount said the margin of error is 5.5 percent.
