Social Security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States. Social Security numbers are used to report your wages to the government and to determine eligibility for Social Security benefits.  Due to changes in federal regulations, you must have a valid offer of employment in order to be eligible for a US Social Security number.

To apply, you must present the following documents 10 days after your entry to the U.S.:
  • Letter from the employer;
  • Letter from OISS;
  • Form SS-5 (SSN Application available online);
  • Valid passport;
  • Valid I-20;
  • Valid I-94 Arrival/Departure Card;
