Spiritual Direction

cp_cert_spiritualdirectionThe Center for Spiritual Development and the Center offer a joint Certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction.  Successful completion of the three-year program results in the reception of the professional ministry credential and continuing education units of specialized or upper-level ministry studies. 

This is a holistic program which integrates theology, Scripture, psychology, spirituality, skills development and supervision in the art of spiritual direction for individuals who discern themselves a call to the ministry of spiritual direction.  Sessions feature content, guided reflection questions, small group conversations, reading and journaling.  Years 2 and 3 of the program include practicum sessions in mentoring groups.  Assessment is based on reading and related assignments to be submitted, practicum under the supervision of experienced directors, and individual supervision.  Please download brochure and application.

This certificate program runs approximately three years.  Classes are held on ten Saturdays each year, September to June.  Schedules and tuition are subject to change.  Additional fees may be incurred for books and materials.  Please check the Center for Spiritual Development Web site for updates.  Application to the program is required prior to enrollment.  All applicants are required to enclose a completed application with proper documentation (as outlined in brochure). Any questionable applications will be reviewed on an individual basis.



INSTRUCTORS

Christine Hilliard, C.S.J., MA is a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange, and has an extensive background in education. In recent years, she has been involved in many adult faith formation programs as Associate Director for RENEW and Director of Adult Religious Education and Evangelization, both for the Diocese of Orange, CA, and Pastoral Associate for the Newman Center, Holy Spirit Parish, Honolulu, Hawaii.

David Hoover, MTS serves as a presenter and spiritual director at the Center for Spiritual Development. He has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and a Master's degree in Spirituality from the Franciscan School of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. His background includes founding a Catholic Worker House, inner-city parish work in the Latino community, and hospital chaplaincy. In the past ten years he has focused on adult spiritual development, giving retreats, spiritual direction, and forming contemplative prayer groups. His special focus is spirituality in the mystical and contemplative tradition. He is currently the representative of "Contemplative Outreach" for Orange County, CA.

Cecilia Magladry, C.S.J., MTS is a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange, and is the Supervisor of the Art of Spiritual Direction Program at CSD. She recently completed a year of theological and spiritual updating at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.  Prior to that, Cecilia served for five years as vocation director for her Community and for eight years as coordinator of the Retreat Program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She also has fourteen years’ experience of elementary and secondary education in California. Cecilia has a deep interest in all aspects of the spiritual journey and in anything that aids the human person and community towards union with God.

Daniel J. Miller, PhD is a writer, teacher, and spiritual guide. Since 1978, Dan has worked as a high school teacher and coach, hospital chaplain, parish pastoral associate, pastoral counselor, spiritual director, retreat leader, and college professor in New Jersey, Washington and California. Dan’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of Christian Spirituality, spiritual formation and pastoral care, liturgical spirituality, the practice of ministry, grief and bereavement, and Christian Initiation. His special interest is the relationship between the contemplative and active dimensions of faith. His dissertation deals with the construction of a mystical-prophetic approach to pastoral care inspired by the work of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. A frequent workshop and retreat leader, Dan has spoken at the Religious Education Congress in Anaheim and published articles for such journals as Spirituality, CHURCH, Pastoral Music, and Catechumenate.

Julie Mussché, MA is the Director of the Center for Spiritual Development. She holds a BA and MA in the field of Geography with a specialization in the area of environmental cognition and behavior, and social geography, with a focus on expressions of religion, sacred space and place on the landscape. In addition to her role as the Director, Julie is a spiritual director, a supervisor, and a presenter. Prior to arriving at CSD, Julie served as public servant for a local agency for twenty five years, with her last seven years  acting as an employee relations and organizational development manager whose responsibilities included labor negotiations, professional coaching for supervisors and managers, labor management mediation, and development and facilitation of leadership development programs, with a significant focus on professional ethics. In her role as an employee relations manager, Julie evaluated issues and recommended actions  regarding violation of ethical conduct policies, provided ethics related training, and wrote and implemented ethical guidelines. Julie is the author of a book "Navigating the Spirit: Charting A Year’s Passage Through God’s Kingdom."

Margaret Scharf, MA, MEd is a member of the Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Western Australia, whose background includes primary education and administration, development of religious education programs, training of catechists in both Australia and the Solomon Islands. Margaret’s research and teaching interests include children’s spirituality, feminist spirituality, supervision for spiritual directors, developmental theories of James Fowler et al., and history of Christian spirituality. She is a spiritual director and supervisor for the Center. Margaret is the Supervisor of the Source at the Center programs and the formation of spiritual director supervisors and, as the liturgist and musician at the Center, holds the title Composer-in-Residence, with songs published in Australia and the United States.

Jo Ann Tabor, C.S.J., MA is a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange, and throughout her years of commitment has ministered as a counselor, spiritual director (over 30 years' experience), program developer, ministry skills facilitator, retreat director, resource person, mentor, facilitator, administrator and educator. Jo Ann has served as principal and teacher; director of novices, director of the Diaconate program for the Diocese of Orange, and is currently a member of the Center faculty, ministering as a spiritual director, presenter and assistant to the Supervisor of the Art of Spiritual Direction program.



LECTURERS

Steve Bruce graduated from the Art of Spiritual Direction program at the Center for Spiritual Development in 2005, and also obtained a certificate in the program to train supervisors for spiritual directors in the Art of Supervision. He is a lifelong Episcopalian, and currently leads Mens Spirituality Groups at Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana and St Clement's by-the-Sea in San Clemente. He leads retreats for men, and is also a youth leader at St Clements. He has been a mentor for the Art of Spiritual Direction program since 2007. Steve is also on the Commission on Ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. He is married to Diane, a suffragan Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

Sandy Ditewig delights in assisting others in all stages of life to become more aware of God's presence, love, and invitations. She is a spiritual director, supervisor of spiritual directors, mentor in the ASD program, and director of individual and group retreats. A graduate of ASD and Supervision of Spiritual Directors at the CSD, Sandy is also a Stephen Leader in her church and encourages others in her local congregation to learn to listen to God more deeply through lectio divina and other spiritual practices. Sandy is employed part-time as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in geriatric rehabilitation, enjoying God using her to bring his healing touch to those recovering from hospitalization.

Jeanne Fallon, C.S.J., MA, a Sister of St. Joseph, has had 27 years’ experience giving spiritual direction in both Papua New Guinea and USA, including the formation of spiritual directors for 17 years at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, California. Her pastoral experience in both countries provides a unique background for her programs, such as, spiritual discernment, the contemplative attitude and fostering a listening heart. As a retreat director and program presenter, she has a holistic approach integrating body, mind, spirit and emotions, promoting the healing of the whole person through Bio-Spiritual Focusing, Reiki and an appreciation for the interconnectedness of all creation. Sister Jeanne has served as the Director of Formation/Novice Director for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.

MaryAnne Huepper, C.S.J., MA is a member of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Orange, and is currently engaged in Emmaus Outreach Ministry. Her primary areas of teaching interest are art and spirituality, church history, liturgy, sacramental theology, selected themes in Scripture, women in the church and world religions. MaryAnne has dedicated many years to the ministry of education and administration, and has added involvement in ministry with the LGBT community and their families; abuse survivors and their families; and ecumenical and interfaith movements in Orange County.

Michael W. Johnston, EdD works as a licensed psychologist, psychotherapist, and director of clinical training in Counseling and Psychological Services at California State University, Long Beach. He offers spiritual direction both independently and as a sanctioned ministry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach. He has worked in student services administration at the University of Kansas and Indiana University. His areas of clinical expertise include existential-humanistic psychotherapy, integrative psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy for depression, developmental counseling, affirmative counseling for gay men, HIV/AIDS, relapse prevention for addicts/alcoholics, and clinical supervision.

Kay Lindahl founded The Listening Center with the mission of exploring the sacred nature of listening. She also founded the Alliance for Spiritual Community, a grass-roots interfaith organization which focuses on the dialogue process. Kay leads workshops on Centering Prayer and conducts workshops and retreats on listening as a spiritual practice. She is a member of the Forge Guild of Spiritual Leaders and Teachers and the International Listening Association. Kay is the author of The Sacred Art of Listening and Practicing the Sacred Art of Listening and How Does God Listen? published by SkyLight Paths Publishing; “The Art of Dialogue and Centering Prayer” in The Diversity of Centering Prayer, published by Continuum Press and "Listening” in Times Like These, published by Church Publishing Incorporated. Kay is also actively involved in a range of interfaith activities.

Kathleen Schinhofen, DMin has enjoyed a long history of ministry. She has worked nationally and ecumenically as an educator, consultant, counselor and facilitator. For many years she has provided pastoral counseling training for Deacon Candidates of the Diocese of Orange and has supported the work of the Spiritual Direction Program at Mt. St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, and the Spiritual Direction formation program at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange. She holds a B.A. in History, Master of Ministry and a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling. Currently, Kathy is the Associate Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Orange. She continues to offer pastoral counseling and spiritual direction as time allows.

Joan Trivett, MA training and passion meet in Ignatian spirituality, spiritual companioning and supervision. An active director and a facilitator of the 19th Annotation Ignatian Retreat, Joan also offers workshops/retreats on contemplative prayer, making time for God, and using colors, doodling and other playful artistic approaches as ways to dialogue with God and scripture. Joan’s academic education began with a degree in English language and literature followed by graduate studies in linguistics, and further study in psychology, sociology, business administration and corporate leadership. She taught in England and California and then worked in aerospace for 20 years before discovering the joys of full-time ministry and grand-mothering. Joan is an associate in ministry with Loyola Institute for Spirituality (LIS). She is a Mentor in the ASD Program.
