Spiritual Direction

NEXT COHORT BEGINS FALL 2009.   The Center for Spiritual Development and Loyola Marymount University offer a joint Certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction.  Successful completion of the three-year program results in the reception of the professional ministry credential and continuing education units of specialized or upper-level ministry studies.  This is a holistic program which integrates theology, Scripture, psychology, spirituality, skills development and supervision in the art of spiritual direction for individuals who discern themselves a call to the ministry of spiritual direction.


General Information

All classes are held at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, California on ten Saturdays each year, between September and June.  Sessions feature content, guided reflection questions, small group conversations, reading and journaling.  Years 2 and 3 of the program include practicum sessions in mentoring groups.  Adherence to the policies outlined in the Student Handbook is essential.  Assessment is based on reading and related assignments to be submitted, practicum under the supervision of experienced directors, and individual supervision.  Tuition is $1,000 per year.  Schedules and tuition are subject to change. INSTRUCTORS

Jane DeLisle, C.S.J. currently serves on the Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange with an emphasis on on-going formation, spirituality and education of the members and partners in ministry. She is also the General Secretary for the Congregation. In thirty seven years of ministry she has served as Executive Director of the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, as administrator, spiritual director, presenter, and mentor. Before that time she was the Vocation and Formation director for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, a position held for nine years. Her early years of ministry were as a Catholic School teacher and principal. She holds a Masters Degree in Education from University of San Francisco; an undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University in History and Religious Studies. She also holds a California Teaching Credential, Religious Education Certificate, and Certificates in Spiritual Direction.

Jeanne Fallon, C.S.J.

Sharon Halsey-Hoover, M.A. lives in Orange, Calif., where she is on the adjunct staff for The Center for Spiritual Development, and is Assistant Director of Bethany, a transitional residence for homeless women. For over 20 years this wife, mother, grandmother, actor, story­teller and spiritual director has been a public speaker and retreat presenter, and has served as youth minister, Director of Religious Education, and as therapist in a domestic violence shelter.

Sr. Christine Hilliard, C.S.J. is a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, California for over 40 years. She is the former Director of Adult Religious Education and Evangelization for the Diocese of Orange, California; Associate Director of the Spiritual Life Center in Honolulu, Hawaii; Pastoral Associate at the Newman Center Holy Spirit Parish in Honolulu, Hawaii; Associate Diocesan Director of RENEW; College Campus Minister; Teacher and Principal. Currently she is on the staff of the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange, California, as presenter and retreat director.

Wilkie Au, Ph.D., Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount, is the author of the award winning books, By Way of the Heart: Toward a Holistic Spirituality and The Enduring Heart: Spirituality for the Long Haul. His books have been translated into Spanish, Polish, Chinese, and Korean and published in foreign editions in Great Britain, India, and the Philippines. Professor Au has served as a member of editorial boards for scholarly journals and is a leader in the field of spirituality and formation for spiritual direction and pastoral ministry.

Don Bisson, F.M.S., D.Min. is a spiritual director, trainer and supervisor of directors. He is widely respected as a commentator and workshop leader on the interrelationship of spirituality and psychology. A Marist brother based in New York, he has graduate degrees in liturgy, spirituality, and transpersonal psychology. His D.Min. was earned at the Pacific School of Religion in the area of Spiritual Direction and Jungian Psychology.

Joyce Cottage, M.A.

Rev. John Endres, S.J., Ph.D., Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, teaches courses in Psalms, Wisdom and Deuterocanonical Books, Intertestamental Literature and the Dead Sea Scrolls. He also leads study tours and pilgrimages for his students to places like Turkey and Israel. Fr. Endres' professional accomplishments include memberships in several associations and committees - among them, the Catholic Biblical Association, Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality and Society of Biblical Literature. Also active in literary pursuits, Fr. Endres served as associate editor for the Catholic Biblical Quarterly from 1993-2000; has co-authored A Retreat with Psalms: Resources for Personal and Communal Prayer (New York/Mahwah, N.J.: Paulist Press, 2001) and Chronicles and Its Synoptic Parallels in Samuel, Kings and Related Biblical Texts (Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1998); and has published numerous articles in theological publications.

Rev. Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D., Director of Biblical Education at the Loyola Institute of Spirituality in Orange, Calif., received an S.T.L. in Scripture from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Yale University in New Testament Studies. He gives many public lectures on Biblical and liturgical topics, is an instructor in the Catholic Bible Institute, and maintains an extensive website devoted to the New Testament and the Roman Catholic Lectionary for Mass.

Janet Ruffing, R.S.M., Ph.D. is a member of the Sisters of Mercy in the Americas and a Professor in Spirituality and Spiritual Direction in the graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University in New York City, USA. She earned her doctorate in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and is the author/editor of more than 60 articles and four books, including Mysticism and Social Transformation. She was one of the founders of Spiritual Directors International and has been mentoring spiritual directors since 1984.
