Carrying On A Family's Legacy
Erin Wilson ’09, communication studies major with a special education minor, places 23rd. That is, she’s the 23rd member of the family to attend LMU, and her brother, who is a freshman, makes 24.
“I have a huge family, and both of my parents attended LMU. My dad was president of Crimson Circle, and my mother was in the Belles service organization. The university is a comfort zone and has a homey feeling,” says Wilson, who has received a Kilp and McKay scholarship during her studies.
The Wilson family has two children currently attending college so the scholarship helped ease the financial burden for her family. “It gave me peace of mind because I could provide for myself,” Wilson says. Wilson’s older sister, Nicole Wilson is an LMU alumna ’07, and her younger sibling Reilly Wilson is class of 2012.
As a child, Wilson had to see a speech pathologist because she suffered from an impediment. The experience with her doctor inspired her to pursue a career in the same field. “Ideally, I want to work with stroke patients and those recovering from brain surgery. Also, I plan to have my own practice,” Wilson says.
Wilson is active on campus as a member of Belles service organization, Delta Gamma sorority, Christian Life Communities, and the Student Alumni Association. She has been on the dean’s list every semester, and recently completed an internship with a media buying company.
“Being a recipient of this scholarship allowed me more freedom, so I got involved. This led me to incorporate service into my academic career, and why I want to be an instrument in changing people’s lives.”
