History
In 1981, a group of visionary alumni established the Mexican American Alumni Association (MAAA) in an effort to develop programs that provide partial tuition scholarships to Loyola Marymount students who demonstrate a commitment to the Latino community. For over 25 years the MAAA program assists LMU in recruiting, mentoring and retaining Latino students by providing
schoalrship support, professional networking opportunities and career opportunities to these students.
MAAA Today
As a testament to the work of the LMU MAAA Program, Newsweek/Kaplan’s 2006 list of America’s 25 Hot Schools named LMU as “Hottest for Hispanics”. MAAA has a commitment to LMU to raise $4 million as part of LMU’s capital campaign. The goal is to increase the endowment fund to provide scholarships in perpetuity to LMU MAAA scholars. With a successful campaign, MAAA will continue to be a catalyst for nurturing future leadership and a vital contributor to Loyola Marymount University's overall goal of becoming one of the most distinguished Catholic Universities in the nation.
Currently, there are four MAAA Board of Director members who also hold positions on the Board of Regents. These connections between MAAA and the university endorse the institution’s objective of ensuring that the leadership of the university is reflective of the diverse student body. Further, numerous MAAA board members are CEOs or executives in Los Angeles, Southern California, and beyond, signifying the influence that MAAA at Loyola Marymount University has in the community and broader society.
