Engaging Students and Making Education Relevant in a Laptop-Learning Environment
Are you aware that our future LMU students are growing up by learning with laptops in their K-12 schools?
Come learn and discuss how to engage students and make education relevant for learners in the digital world.
We are pleased to announce that Elizabeth Ellison will visit LMU to discuss the above issues with LMU faculty and students. Elizabeth is a very gifted educator who teaches at the Fishler School, a nationally recognized school that has been involved in 1 to 1 learning programs for more than four years.
Elizabeth teaches language arts in grades 6-8 and will speak and provide practical examples of how to engage students in vibrant digital learning environment.
Research has demonstrated that students with routine access to laptops score higher on assessments, demonstrate better analytical skills, engage in problem solving, and collaborate more effectively on schoolwork. Come and discuss the impact 1-1 learning has had at Fishler, how to teach effectively in such an environment, and how students have responded.

Blackboard Upgrade
During the Holiday break, the Blackboard system will be upgraded to include the following services:
- Improved Discussion Board features and bug fixes
- Blogs, Wikis, ePortfolios, and Podcasting
This upgrade may cause an outage of the Blackboard system periodically throughout the Holiday break (Dec 22-Jan 2). All 2007 courses, enrollments, and coursework will remain intact during the upgrade, however, all 2008 courses, enrollments, and course materials will NOT REMAIN INTACT during the upgrade. We strongly recommend that all Instructors Archive any content already added to their Spring 2008 courses by Dec 21st and then wait to continue working on their Blackboard courses until January 3rd, 2008. Further, all requests for Course Merges in Blackboard can be submitted to the helpdesk at any time, but they will not be merged until after the upgrade is completed.
Demos of the new features in Blackboard will be held during the first few weeks of Spring semester. Should you have any questions, please contact your Instructional Technology Analyst or the Helpdesk.

LMU on iTunes U goes Public
LMU has completed the first podcasting pilot and began Phase II in Spring '07
with the implementation of a public LMU on iTunes U.
iTunes U is a free service for colleges and universities hosted by Apple Computer. LMU on iTunes U provides easy access to educational content created at LMU, including lectures and interviews 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
LMU on iTunes U is a variation of iTunes, the popular online music store by Apple Computer. LMU on iTunes U uses the iTunes format to store and manage educational audio or video content created by LMU faculty and makes it available quickly and easily to students, faculty, and staff. In a recent survey of a sample of LMU students over 70% had iPods from Apple Computer, and iTunes is the only application that supports the overwhelmingly popular iPod.
Through LMU on iTunes U, users can download course content to their computers (Macs or PCs) regardless of their location. They can then listen to and view content on their computers, or transfer that content to an iPod for listening or viewing on the go. LMU on iTunes U sets educational content free by delivering the best solution for its distribution. And LMU on iTunes U will work with BlackBoard, leveraging existing investments in technology infrastructures.
In addition to providing a great conduit for digital academic content, iTunes is also the largest source of legal digital music available online. So students can buy and download files that have both educational and entertainment value, with all copyrights honored and the full support of the music industry.

Video ConferencingVideo conferencing uses telecommunications of audio and video to bring people at different sites together for a meeting. This can be as simple as a conversation between two people in private offices (point-to-point) or involve several sites (multi-point) with more than one person in large rooms at different sites. Besides the audio and visual transmission of people, video conferencing can be used to share documents, computer-displayed information, and whiteboards. (definition from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_conferencing)
A few examples of how video conferencing is used in Academic environments include: holding “live” meetings with researchers at various institutions, inviting guest lecturers who cannot come to campus to speak to a group of students, bringing together students from many institutions so that they can share their work, interviewing potential candidates, and offering access to keynote lectures and speeches to people off-campus. Video-conferenced events can be recorded, archived, and/or streamed over the Internet. To read an interesting discussion of video conferencing for courses go to: http://videoinstructor.pbwiki.com/FrontPage
To schedule a video conference, please contact the IT helpdesk or your ITA a minimum of 1 week prior to the event.

Clickers in the Classroom
Clickers are wireless keypads or personal response systems that faculty can use to increase interactivity in their classroom. This technology provides instant feedback to both instructors and students. As of Spring 2007, LMU standardized on Interwrite PRS (Personal Response System)– or "clickers." What does this mean? ...
Interwrite is the officially supported “clicker” on campus. With FREE software (download on the web) and a FREE receiver box (use this form), you can ask the bookstore to order clickers for your class, and then use the clickers to gauge understanding of a concept, to poll for opinions anonymously, to increase student interaction, and to take attendance.
See how Prof. Levine is using clickers at USC to enhance learning in the humanities. Contact your ITA for more details.
