LMU Academic Scholarship Programs
Loyola Marymount University offers a wide range of academic scholarship programs to recognize and reward the scholastic accomplishments of our most distinguished entering freshmen. No special application is required for these scholarships, except for the Jesuit Community Scholarship (see below). All applicants for admission are automatically considered. Selection is based on academic accomplishment, including GPA, standardized test results, rigor of college prep curriculum and class standing. Additional factors may also be considered for particular scholarships, as indicated below.
Please note that Academic Scholarships are available to first time freshmen only, and no student will be selected to receive more than one of these awards. All students are eligible for scholarships. Equal opportunity shall be provided for all incoming freshman applicants for scholarship consideration on the basis of their demonstrated academic ability and merit without discrimination on the basis of their race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, citizenship, age, disability, and status with the armed forces unless otherwise stated in the scholarship guidelines.
Here is a summary of our scholarship programs:
Arrupe Scholarship: Named for Fr. Pedro Arrupe, the long time Superior General of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) whose vision of Educating Men and Women for Others has become the hallmark of Jesuit education, the Arrupe Scholarship is awarded to the top 10% of LMU applicants. The Arrupe Scholarship award is $12,500 annually, renewable for four years, for a total value of $50,000.
Trustee and Presidential Scholarships: Each year, a very small number of the Arrupe Scholars are selected for further recognition, based on truly distinguished and exceptional academic accomplishments. These students are invited to our annual Presidential Preview Weekend in late February, where they have the opportunity to interview with LMU faculty and compete for Presidential and Trustee Scholarships, our most prestigious awards for entering freshmen. Twenty Presidential Scholars and ten Trustee Scholars will be selected by the faculty. Presidential Scholars receive $17,000 annually ($68,000 over four years) and Trustee Scholars receive scholarship and grant assistance equal to full tuition, room and board for four years.
Arrupe Scholars selected to attend Presidential Preview Weekend represent the top 1% of all applicants to LMU. These students will receive an invitation in advance of the weekend; superior students whose records may warrant consideration for this program are encouraged to file their applications early to allow for timely consideration. The Presidential and Trustee Scholarships replace the Arrupe Scholarships for those students selected.
Jesuit and Marymount High School Scholarships: In recognition of the values and heritage LMU shares with the Jesuit and Marymount secondary schools in the United States, one student from each of these high schools will be awarded the Jesuit or Marymount High School Scholarship annually. This scholarship carries a value of $17,000 annually, and is renewable for four years, for a total value of $68,000. In addition to academic accomplishment, selection for this scholarship considers involvement in school and community activities, leadership and service.
Leadership Scholarship: Based on leadership in school and community, in addition to academic accomplishment, 20 students each year will be selected to receive LMU’s Leadership Scholarship. Leadership Scholars receive $11,500 annually for four years ($46,000 in total), enroll in an exclusive leadership development seminar during their first year, and are supported in seeking leadership opportunities throughout their undergraduate careers. Special consideration is given to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership despite significant hardship or disadvantage.
Jesuit Community Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded by LMU’s Jesuit community to graduates of Jesuit or other Catholic secondary schools whose contributions to their community through service and leadership warrant special recognition. Approximately 10 Jesuit Community Scholarships are awarded each year. Jesuit Community Scholarship winners receive $7,500 annually for four years, for a total of $30,000. A separate application is required for this scholarship, or obtain an application by calling the Office of Undergraduate Admission at 1-800-LMU-INFO.
Los Angeles County Scholarship: LMU’s president, Fr. Robert B. Lawton, S.J., established the Los Angeles County Scholarship in 2001 to assist the most exceptional local students from the most disadvantaged of backgrounds. Limited to residents of Los Angeles County, approximately four students each year whose families have very limited economic means will receive grants from LMU which, when combined with federal and state scholarships and a standard work study award, will cover virtually the full cost of attendance.
Athletic Scholarships: LMU offers scholarships in the following sports: Men’s Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Water Polo and Women’s Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo. All athletic scholarship selections are made by the athletic department and the individual coaches. If you are interested in consideration for an athletic scholarship, please call the Athletic Department (310.338.2765) for assistance.
