Course Descriptions

THST 398
Prophets and Social Justice in the Bible and New Zealand

Professor Daniel Smith-Christopher
This course examines the biblical prophets, focusing especially on Isaiah, Micah, Amos, Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. What makes this course unique is that in the third week, the focus shifts to the impact of the biblical prophets on the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, who were deeply influenced by these texts. The Bible even inspired the rise of a series of Maori prophets, some of whom we will study. Students will have a good introduction to the biblical prophets and their historical context, and the impact and interpretation of these texts among the Maori.
