Dean Barbara J. Busse cordially invites you to an opening reception in celebration of Africa’s Legacy in Mexico:The Photographs of Tony Gleaton. Hosted Saturday, September 8, 2007, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Laband Art Gallery in the Fritz B. Burns Fine Arts Center at LMU. This exhibition features 45 black and white photographs from a series of portraits of African Mexicans by Tony Gleaton.  Taken in the late 1980’s and 1990’s primarily in three villages along the southwestern coast of Mexico, Gleaton’s photographs offer insight into a little-known aspect of Mexican culture.  These poignant images focus on the present-day descendants of African slaves who were brought to Mexico by the Spanish colonists beginning in the 1500s. The reception is made possible through the collaboration and support of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, and the African American and Mexican American Alumni Associations. The exhibition is organized by Carolyn Peter, director of university art galleries and is being held in conjunction with LMU’s 2007 Bellarmine Forum I/M/MIGRATION.
