The Campaign for LMU

The 21st century work force is more competitive than ever; college graduates need to demonstrate transferable skills and leadership abilities that enable them to contribute to a dynamic, global work environment. Employers expect recent graduates to present relevant practical work experiences gained through internships, work-study programs, and part- or full-time jobs.

LMU graduates stand out from the crowd

Loyola Marymount University’s Strategic Plan embraces the need to expand and advance Career Development Services. The priority for CDS is to increase efforts to assist students during and beyond their LMU experience and support successful transitions to postgraduate life.

Our vision includes: innovative program development; practical work experiences focusing on internships and experiential education opportunities; and a physical and technological environment of excellence.

Our Strengths

Career Development Services (CDS) takes great pride in the strength of our students and alumni, the caliber of employers who recruit our students and our staff’s commitment to excellence.

In accordance with the Jesuit and Marymount traditions, LMU values the development of the whole person and encourages students to discover their own strengths, interests and values. LMU students acquire skills through their academic experiences and co-curricular involvement. LMU graduates grow to be fulfilled in their own lives, successful in their careers and involved in the communities around them.

Career Development Services is also a conduit between the campus and the community; building relationships within the greater Los Angeles area and beyond. CDS engages employers who present opportunities for students and alumni to apply their unique gifts and talents to make a difference.

CDS provides meaningful services to our constituent communities; offering a broad range of services, resources and programs to employers, students, alumni and the LMU community. Career Development Services aligns the preparedness of our students with the workforce needs of our employers; positioning LMU graduates as the employers’ candidates of choice.

Our Challenge

Career Development Services

A career is defined as a chosen pursuit; a path or course that challenges the individual to contribute to a total organization vision; the lifetime commitment necessary to distinguishing oneself as an accomplished professional.

Career Development Services must prepare LMU graduates to succeed in a dynamic, global workforce impacted by economic, political, environmental and world affairs. CDS must remain innovative and entrepreneurial in order to empower LMU students and graduates to employ their passion, talents and values to respond to the challenges and opportunities of both the present and the future.

The campaign goal of $250,000 will enable CDS to: expand its career development services to keep pace with the needs of LMU graduates and employers in this, the new millennium; develop internships with non-profit organizations that are rooted in social justice; and provide an environment of excellence in which prominent employers interact with LMU students and alumni.

Campaign Goals

Invest in Innovative Program Development $100,000
CDS wishes to expand its programming beyond the current format and to add senior symposiums, career education conferences, formal mentoring opportunities and Alternate Break programs to its scope. This will necessitate the recruitment and retention of staff who are experts in the field of experiential education, career counseling and employer relations. New initiatives will also necessitate the creation of collateral materials that support the expansion of innovative career-related programs across the broader curricular offerings available at LMU.

Invest in Social Justice

Internships $ 100,000
Career Development Services is dedicated to promoting the LMU mission of social justice. LMU students are encouraged by CDS to explore career paths in non-profit and government agencies that incorporate outreach to underserved communities. CDS would like to extend its commitment toward community-based careers by providing LMU students with the opportunity to intern for regional non-profit, government and civic organizations. Funding for this program will enable LMU students to complete relevant internship experiences while gaining first-hand knowledge of the challenges faced by community-based organizations.

Invest in a Physical

Environment that Supports a Culture of Excellence $ 50,000
Career Development Services seeks physical and technological environments that are appropriate to the University’s strategic goals. Increased outreach efforts to Los Angeles based, regional and national employers will generate physical and technological needs that cannot be met with current facilities. The goal is to create and provide physical and technological resources that enable efficient and meaningful engagement and communication between LMU students, alumni and employers.

Los Angeles is recognized as the most diverse and dynamic city of it’s time; one that is home to some of the most prominent, global employers. Career Development Services embraces its role as an ambassador between the campus and corporate communities. CDS is continuously improving its services to ensure that students and alumni can leverage their personal talents to meet current and future needs within their chosen professions. CDS envisions: additional, innovative programming; internships in social justice; and an environment of excellence.
