CDS 101 ~ Introduction to Career Development Services at LMU

In this session we introduce a comprehensive career development strategy, including on-campus and part-time employment. The counseling services of CDS are introduced, including resume critique, workshops, and mock-interviews. Other programs, such as job fairs, on-campus interviews, job listings, and internships will also be discussed. As time and context permit, individual career development plans may also be explored.

Job Search Strategies

It is said that looking for a job is a job in itself. This session will help you to save time by selecting search methods that are most effective for your interests. You will also learn how to develop your network and how to enhance a Job Fair experience.

Resume Writing

Learn how to present yourself in words on paper or via e-mail. A resume advertises your most relevant skills to potential employers in an easy to read style based on the skills that are most relevant to the potential employer. This session presents the basic requirements and includes extra tips you need to know before writing (or revising) a great resume and cover letter.

Internships

This session discusses the importance of internships and introduces LMU’s internship program. Learn how to set learning objectives, how to select an internship that fits your major and career goals, and how to document the experience. This session also informs you how to make the most of your internship by expanding your career network.

Interviewing Skills

If your resume is effective you will be invited to an interview. Make sure this important conversation is the best performance you can deliver! In this session you will learn how to prepare the most common types of interview questions and their responses, how to handle stress, and what to do following your interview. This session can also be combined with a videotaped "mock interview" and critique.

Assessment I ~ Introduction

Career counselors often use two different Internet-based assessments to assist you in your career development and decision-making. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator‚ (MBTI) is one of the most widely used personality assessments. It looks at how you work with others and suggests what types of careers and co-workers you might prefer.

The Strong Interest Inventory™ is a questionnaire that examines your level of interest in a wide range of activities of familiar occupations. Your interests are then compared to the same interests of people of different types and of different occupations. The result is an occupational type that can be used to help you develop a general strategy for making academic and career decisions.

In this introductory session a career counselor explains the assessment(s), how to access the Internet site, and the payment process (each assessment is $15 per person). Assessment II (see the following session) is scheduled at least one week later. At the second session the career counselor returns with individual assessment results and conducts an interpretation.

Assessment II ~ Interpretation

Assessment I (above) is a prerequisite of this session. During this session a career counselor returns with individual assessment results and conducts an interpretation. The MBTI and/or Strong Interest Inventory are accessed and completed on-line from any computer with access to the Internet. At least seven days are required between Assessment I and II so that our staff can prepare individualized packets for each assessment that is taken. This session will explain the results of the assessment(s) and how they may be used for academic and career development. The results also have implications for understanding the type of work environment you might enjoy as well as the types of co-workers you are likely to prefer working with the most.
