About the Sir Thomas More Chair and Professor Chmielewski, S.J.

  • Professor Philip J. Chmielewski, S.J. is the first holder of the Sir Thomas More Chair of Engineering Ethics.  
  •  

  • Along with his colleagues in the College of Science and Engineering, Professor Chmielewski develops courses, modules, and programs that contribute to the education of informed, responsible professional engineers. 
  •  

  •  Professor Chmielewski pursues research and undertakes publication as he participates in the contemporary development of the field of engineering ethics.  
  •  

  • His research interests include the use of artifacts and constructions to transmit social values, the relation between imagination and innovation, the complex specificity of engineering intelligence, the design of complex systems in shaping civic space, and the training in alertness to indigenous knowledge, past social suffering, and the usually unseen needs of persons and communities.
  •  

  • In addition, he cooperates with the other Ethics Chairs at Loyola Marymount University as they work to articulate further the means for integrating ethics as a central focus in the education of all members of the LMU community.  
  •  

  • Professor Chmielewski participates in the American Society for Engineering Education, the Society of Christian Ethics, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.  
  •  

  • He is the secretary/treasurer of ASEE Engineering Ethics Constituent Committee.
