Policies


Rules for Researchers


1. The Department of Archives and Special Collections is open by appointment only. Please call (310) 338-87478, 82780, or 85203 for an appointment.


2. Researchers are asked to complete a registration form and provide identification on their first visit. On subsequent visits they need only sign the registration book.


3. Materials in the Department of Archives and Special Collections do not circulate and must be used in the reading room. Researchers are allowed in the reading area only and may not browse the stacks. All materials are to be handled with care.


4. Call slips must be completed and signed to page all materials. The staff reserves the right to limit the number of items a researcher will be permitted to use at one time. Requests for materials located in off-site storage are limited to 18 boxes per day.


5. All materials must be left in their present order and arrangement. Return manuscript materials to the folder or box from which they came. In some cases, photocopies or other facsimiles or transcriptions may be made available in lieu of the original. Cotton gloves must be worn when the staff so requests.


6. Please use pencils only. No pens or markers are allowed.


7. Photography in the reading room is prohibited.


8. Typewriters, computers or tape recorders may be used with advance permission.


9. Briefcases, purses, typewriter cases, all bags and coats are to be checked with the staff. Staff reserves the right to inspect patrons' possessions when they leave the reading room.


10. Photocopies will be made at the discretion of the staff and only by a staff member. Charges for this service will be made at an established rate. The staff reserves the right to limit the number of photocopies which may be obtained. If the possibility of damage to the materials exists, the staff will not make photocopies.


11. Materials in the Department of Archives and Special Collections may be subject to copyright. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, Loyola Marymount University does not claim ownership of the copyright of any materials in its collections. The user or publisher must secure permission to publish from the copyright owner. The University does not assume any responsibility for infringement of copyright or of publication rights held by the original author, artist or creator or his/her heirs, assignees or executors.


12. Permission to publish materials from Archives and Special Collections must be obtained from the head of the Department in advance of publication.
