Message from the Dean
A Message from Kristine Brancolini,
Dean of University Libraries
Welcome to the Charles Von der Ahe Library! The library supports the teaching, learning, and research needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Loyola Marymount University and the Loyola Law School. The library is an important center of intellectual, cultural, and social life on campus –- a role that will be strengthened in the coming years as we design and build the William H. Hannon Library, scheduled to open in 2009.
Loyola Marymount University offers a dynamic academic environment and the
Von der Ahe Library contributes to each student’s education, including developing skills as a life-long learner. You will find the Library to be an important destination for you –- both physically and virtually. The Von der Ahe is centrally located on the Alumni Mall, across from Foley Hall. Please come inside and familiarize yourself with our outstanding services, collections, and study space. Our collections total nearly 500,000 volumes of books and journals and 15,000 video recordings. The Department of Archives and Special Collections houses art, rare books, and archives, including the University Archives and the Center for the Study of Los Angeles Research Collection. With regard to facilities, our atrium is especially noteworthy, with abundant natural light, a beautiful fountain, and comfortable seating. Whether you seek a quiet, individual study space; a small-group study room; or a small-group media showing room, the Von der Ahe Library addresses your needs. The third important component is assistance in finding library services and information resources. Meet our knowledgeable, friendly and helpful librarians and staff. We are completely focused on the success of each student and faculty member at LMU.
You will find that our newly designed website is useful as a source of information about the library, its services and collections. Our website is also a gateway to a wealth of online information. Please take some time to explore the new site.
I hope that you will visit our website often to learn about new services and collections and special events. Perhaps our most exciting news is that we have begun the process of designing a new library. The William H. Hannon Library will sit on the bluff between the Leavey Residence Halls and the Jesuit Community. For more information about the project, visit the New Library.
I invite you to contact me with your comments and suggestions regarding the Library: brancoli@lmu.edu. We are here to serve your teaching, learning, and research needs.
