Off-campus Access

Connect to Library Resources from Off-Campus

When you are off the LMU campus and you click on a link from our subscription Databases page, from the Journal List, from LINUS, or from ERes, you should get this screen asking for your name and the barcode number on your OneCard (the Library Number on the back of your OneCard that begins with a 2). If you have difficulties connecting, please continue below or contact the Reference Desk at (310)338-2790.

Questions & Issues

Who is eligible to use the library's electronic resources from off campus?
You must be faculty, staff, or an enrolled student to access these resources from off-campus. Owing to the license agreements we sign with the vendors of these products, they are not available from off campus for alumni. However, alumni are welcome to visit the library.

When I go to one of the library's subscription databases, I'm not seeing the screen asking for my name and barcode.
Are you using the links to resources on the library homepage? You must use these links, which have been formatted to pass you through the library's proxy server. If you try to connect to our electronic resources from bookmarks, from a Blackboard page, or from another website, they may not work correctly.

I'm entering my name and barcode, but it does not work.
There are several things that could be wrong. If your browser automatically fills in the information, try entering in manually. If it still does not work, there may be a problem with your library record. Try checking your record in the LINUS patron information page. Then call the Circulation Desk at (310)338-2788. Special Summer Note: Students are eligible for off-campus access during the summer, but the library has no way of knowing if you will return in the fall. Please call the Circulation Desk at the above number and ask to have your library card expiration date extended.

I do not have a OneCard.
Eligible LMU faculty, staff, and students can obtain a OneCard from the OneCard office.

Which web browser should I use?
Remote access should work with all the major browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera), as well as browsers from Internet Service Providers such as AOL, MSN, and Earthlink. If your browser does not work, try using a different browser (particularly recommended for AOL users): connect to the Internet as you do usually, then start Internet Explorer or another browser.

It is really slow.
The proxy technology will be slightly slower than your normal Internet access. Dial-up users are strongly encouraged to consider high-speed access, particularly if they are frequently accessing the library's resources from off campus.

Can I use Google Scholar to link to LMU's resources from off campus?
Google Scholar searches journal publishers' sites and other collections of mostly scholarly journal articles and other texts. When you search Google Scholar on the LMU campus, it knows that you are affiliated with LMU and provides links to LMU's subscriptions to journals and other resources. If you are not on the LMU campus, Google Scholar does not provide links to LMU's resources. You can configure your off-campus computer to link to these resources by going to Google Scholar Preferences, searching Library Links for Loyola Marymount, and selecting "Loyola Marymount University (Full-Text @ LMU Library)." Questions? Please call the Reference Desk at (310)338-2790. Keep in mind that LMU's subscription databases will get you to the same full text articles as Google Scholar with much more powerful and functional search options.

Can I use LMU's subscription databases from my workplace?
Your workplace network may have firewalls and other security features that prevent accessing our resources from their networks. Please contact your network administrator with questions.

I am getting a message that says "You are not authorized to view this page" or "The address you are trying to access is invalid."
Please call the Reference Desk at (310)338-2790 and tell us the name of the resource or publication you are trying to access.

I still need help.
Please call the Reference Desk at (310)338-2790.
