Employment Opportunities for Undergraduate students
There are several options for students to work on the LMU Campus.
Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study (FWS) provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. This program encourages community service work and work related to the recipient's course of study. The Federal Work-Study award is an opportunity for students to work, not an obligation to work.
Eligibility
To apply for federal work study, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be found eligible by the Financial Aid Office. You will receive an allocation of Federal Work Study on your Award Notification. The Financial Aid Office may require that you submit additional documents to determine your eligibility and you must meet financial aid priority funding application deadlines.
Loyola Work
Loyola Work is funded by LMU and offered to those students who do not qualify for Federal Work Study and for work with LMU Campus Ministry or the LMU Phonathon as students employed for these positions are not eligible for federal work study due to federal guidelines regarding work with religious affiliation or solicitation. Resident Advisors also receive a portion of their compensation as Loyola Work.
Eligibility
To apply for Loyola Work, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be found eligible by the Financial Aid Office. You will receive an allocation of Loyola Work on your Award Notification. The Financial Aid Office may require that you submit additional documents to determine your eligibility and you must meet financial aid priority funding application deadlines.
Transfer Work
Departments on the LMU campus can also hire students funding by their department budget. The hiring department must send notice to the Financial Aid Office that they have hired you and the total amount you are able to earn. The total amount of Transfer Work you can earn will appear on your PROWL Financial Aid. The Transfer Work Award will not affect your eligibility for other types of financial aid.
Student Worker Program
The Student Workers are a work for tuition service program unique to LMU. The program provides a unique opportunity for students to fund their education through performing vital services for the University. The 24 Student Workers (12 men and 12 women) have a longstanding tradition of providing support for departments and campus programs. The program provides a balance between academics, work, service and social development. Applications are available in early Spring from Student Life. If selected for this program the amount of your academic year award will be listed on PROWL Financial Aid. If selected as a Student Worker, you cannot also receive Federal Work Study or Loyola Work.
Finding A Job
If you have received Federal Work Study or Loyola Work, you must accept it on PROWL and find a job on campus. Student Employment Services usually holds a job fair the weekend prior to the start of each fall semester which will give you an opportunity to meet with campus employers. You may be hired on the spot or an interview scheduled for the first week of school.
To begin working, Federal Work Study, Loyola Work and Transfer Work all require that you complete paperwork with Student Employment Services Office.
How will you be paid?
You'll be paid by the hour if you're an undergraduate. You will be paid directly, twice per month. Your hourly wage will be at least the current federal minimum wage but might be higher, depending on the type of work you do and the skills required. The amount you earn can't exceed your total FWS, Loyola Work or Transfer Work award. When assigning work hours, your employer or financial aid administrator will consider your award amount, your class schedule, and your academic progress.
Student Responsibilities
- Working on campus is good preparation for when you begin your career after college. Depending on where you work a dress code may be required.
- Your employer will provide you with a work schedule. If you will be late, absent or require a temporary adjustment to your work schedule, it is your responsibility to notify your employer.
- Students with Federal Work Study cannot work more than 20 hours per week.
- It is your responsibility to keep track of your hours so that you do not work over your work allocation.
