Library Instruction

What does Instruction Services provide?
Instruction Services is a component of the Library's Reference Department. It provides opportunities for faculty and students to have reference librarians teach one or a series of classroom sessions. We teach both the use of locally owned resources, and the knowledge and skills needed to conduct research in an online environment. What do the sessions cover?
The librarian can cover searching strategy, reference tools, catalog use, and selection and use of appropriate periodical indexes, both electronic and print, as well as relevant Web sites. Sessions usually include demonstrations and useful handouts.
What if my class needs a different approach or only one very specific issue covered?
With enough lead time, we can tailor one or more sessions to closely match your specific needs. Don't hesitate to contact us regarding shorter, very focused sessions or multiple, course-integrated sessions over the semester.
What kind of information does the librarian need to know to prepare a session?
- Which class
- The number of students
- The date and time of the proposed session(s)
- The nature of the material to be covered
- The nature of the class assignment (paper, presentation, etc.)
We also appreciate a copy of the assignment, and information about any particular special skills, materials, sites or types of problem you'd like us to cover.
