How will an Executive MBA degree enhance my career?
An AACSB-accredited EMBA reflects a sophisticated level of knowledge and skills addressing a wide range of contemporary management topics and issues. Achieving an EMBA results in a well-developed understanding of strategic thinking and management in the global economy. An EMBA provides the professional skills needed to gain additional management responsibility. For the entrepreneur the knowledge gained can make the difference between success and failure in a highly competitive environment.
EMBA or MBA – which program is right for me?
EMBA programs allow experienced managers to earn an MBA degree in two years or less while continuing to work full time. Most EMBA programs evaluate applicants on performance ,work experience, career progress and goals, professional recommendations, and demonstrated ability to accomplish graduate-level business course work. Faculty assigned to EMBA programs are highly effective teachers, expertly qualified through their research and professional experience. EMBA students bring a deeper understanding of the workplace and managerial experience into the classroom. This becomes an important shared-learning basis for fellow students. They enter and graduate as a group with a strong program emphasis on collaborative learning and exposure to real-world business situations taught from an executive management-level perspective.
In contrast, most part-time and fully employed MBA programs for working professionals do not require significant management experience and place heavier emphasis on undergraduate grades and GMAT scores for admission. While some EMBA programs have integrated curricula in which management concepts are interrelated in theme-based modules, most EMBA programs are discipline based where traditional MBA subjects are taught at an “executive level.” Part-time MBA programs are mainly discipline based. Students proceed at their own pace, taking an average of 3 to 5 years to complete course requirements.
How do you judge an Executive MBA program?
While there are many different criteria to consider, careful examination of practical and qualitative program elements are essential in making a decision:
• Does the curriculum satisfy my personal and professional development goals?
• Will this program make me a better manager and a better leader?
• Is the learning environment and class size right for me?
• What sets one program apart from another in the marketplace?
• What is the value gained versus the cost of the program?
Why should I consider Loyola Marymount over the other Executive MBA programs in Southern California?
Most, if not all, programs in the L.A. area offer relevant courses, experienced faculty, convenient class schedules and great logistical support. These components along with the AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation are necessary, but not sufficient.
The Loyola Marymount Executive MBA goes well beyond the “necessary.” In addition to gaining new knowledge and skills, you will focus on your own personal development and professional growth. You will have access to an outside executive coach who will provide one-on-one guidance as you develop your professional growth plan.
You will learn how to lead change, lead with integrity, solve problems, make effective decisions, communicate internally and externally, and manage crises. The practical application of program material to management in the real world is stressed. Small classes and a teaching-oriented faculty will help you discover your strengths and develop strategies for leveraging your leadership and management abilities.
Our Executive MBA is built on Loyola Marymount’s Jesuit tradition of academic excellence – an intellectually rigorous learning environment that educates the whole person.
It’s been a while since I have been in school, I’m not sure I can handle the academic rigor.
First, faculty fully recognize that participants have been away from studying for some time and that they have competing demands on their time. Classroom assignments, although stretching, are designed so you develop mastery of the material while you build your own confidence. You will be given a workbook at the beginning of the module that contains all assignments, due dates, learning objectives and estimated time to complete each assignment.
Second, faculty are available to answer questions and to help where needed. “Care for the person” is a hallmark of the College and Jesuit education. You will even find faculty members who will hold study sessions before a big assignment is due.
Third, after acceptance, participants receive access to MBA Primer, a self-paced web-based refresher course on accounting, finance and statistics. Completing MBA Primer will provide a good foundational base on the quantitative materials covered in the first Module.
Lastly, your study team will be balanced with people of different experience, disciplines and backgrounds (accounting/finance, marketing, human resources, etc.), so that members of your team can provide help and coaching to each other.
How long will it take me to complete the program?
21 months. The EMBA program has a cohort class structure that offers a planned curriculum in an executive setting. Members of your class begin the program at the same time in August and move through the curriculum together, completing the degree requirements for graduation as a group in May.
When do classes meet?
You’ll attend class two Fridays and Saturdays a month, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. There are four modules (Fall, Spring, Fall, Spring) and a Summer Project in the program. Each module has eight two-day sessions (16 full days per module).
What time commitment is involved?
Success in professional life demands a high level of motivation and commitment and it is no different in LMU’s EMBA Program. At least 15 to 20 hours a week should be allowed for a combination of work outside the classroom, research, teamwork and course assignments. The burden is eased by ongoing support from other participants, your study team and assistance from LMU faculty & program staff.
What if I have to miss class?
Many of our EMBA participants must travel, and have other family and professional commitments that occur on class days. Participants who must miss class make advance arrangements with the faculty and their study team members to help them make up whatever they miss.
What are the qualifications?
A Bachelor’s degree with an acceptable level of scholarship from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of 6 years of increasing responsibility in professional, management, or entrepreneurial experience.
How are candidates evaluated for admission to the EMBA program?
The admission decision is individualized and based on a candidate’s potential to pursue graduate study. Each candidate is evaluated on work and management experience, career accomplishments, potential for advancement, letters of recommendation, personal interview, information provided in the application form, undergraduate and graduate record (if any) and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), if required. Selection is based on academic potential without regard to race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age or disability.
Do I have to take the GMAT?
The GMAT exam is not required for Executive MBA applicants who are able to demonstrate, either through past academic performance or work experience, sufficient strength in the areas of quantitative and analytical reasoning. Candidates will be advised after the initial interview and application screening if the GMAT is required. Some candidates may wish to submit a GMAT score in order to enhance their application materials. For more information about the GMAT, access the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC).
How much does the program cost?
$75,000 for the 21-month program starting in August 2008. Fee includes tuition, all university fees, books, program software, lodging and most food for three residentials, meals on class days, and parking. The only costs not included are transportation to and from residentials and a laptop computer required in the program. The program fee will remain constant for EMBA Class 2008-2010.
