Guidelines
Eligibility Criteria
Continuing faculty who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply:
- Proposed project does not represent a sabbatical project proposal. Faculty taking a sabbatical may apply for a BCLA research grant, but must clearly delineate how the sabbatical project is distinct from or augmented by the BCLA summer grant.
- Funding is for summer only.
- If a recipient fails to sign his or her contract with the University for the following academic year, the grant will be automatically revoked.
- Completed proposals, including online review (Chair) must be submitted by the deadline given or the applicant’s project proposal will not be considered.
- For awardees of a previous BCLA summer grant only:
- If funding is awarded for one summer, the applicant is not eligible to apply for a BCLA summer grant in the following summer.
- For current members of the BCLA Scholarship/Research Committee only:
- Applications from Committee members are welcome, but will be reviewed by an independent committee named by the Dean, including representatives from both humanities, social sciences, as well as an ex-officio member of the Dean’s Office.
- Recommendations for funding will be forwarded to the Dean. The Dean will make all final funding decisions.
Funding
The Chief Academic Officer has established a pool of $80,000 to provide funding for continuing faculty grants in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. Of this amount, $60,000 has been designated by the Dean of the College for funding fifteen (15) summer grants of $4000.
Review of all applications will be completed by BCLA faculty members serving on the Scholarship/Research Committee for the College. Recommendations for funding will be made to the Dean, who makes all final funding decisions.
- The Summer Grant awards are $4,000. Eighty percent of the grant ($3,200) will be awarded in May. The remaining 20% ($800) will be awarded in late October, upon receipt of a satisfactory final report. Faculty must submit notice of grant acceptance in writing.
- Faculty may only accept one LMU internal grant each summer. Faculty may not accept another internal or external grant for the same project.
- If two faculty members agree to work on a joint project, one faculty member must assume the responsibility as the fiscal agent and for submitting the final report. Grant funds will not be split.
- Grants are considered taxable income and should be reported a such for the year it is received. It is unnecessary to provide the University with receipts of purchases related to the project. Consult your tax advisor for further information.
Research Project
The Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts is committed to assisting all BCLA faculty in their research and scholarship efforts and creative works. The grant awards will be funded based on the quality of the research applications submitted by BCLA faculty each fall. Other considerations, such as the Dean’s priorities or initiatives for the College, will be considered independently of these grant awards. That is, the faculty grants will be considered entirely upon their own merit, and not how they relate to other activities or issues within the College.
- Grants are awarded for original research or professional creative work to be conducted during the summer months and are intended to cover costs incurred. Requests to use this grant during other times of the year must be approved by the BCLA Scholarship/Research Committee.
- Long-term or on-going projects previously funded by an LMU Summer Research Grant will be considered for funding only if the narrative clearly states how this grant request differs from the previously funded proposal.
Project Narrative
As part of the Online Application, you will be required to upload the Project Narrative.
- Because reviewers will not possess specialized knowledge of the proposed field of study, the project description should be free of jargon.
- Please attach a one-page Project Budget to the Project Narrative. This budget does not count as part of the three-page limit.
- The Project Narrative should not include a separate bibliography page as pertinent works should be addressed as part of the discussion under the Literature Review heading.
Project Narratives longer than three pages will not be considered.
The Project Narrative should address the following elements, using these same headings:
- Project Description
A concise and realistic narrative statement that describes what the proposed research is intended to accomplish. It should address the project’s potential contribution to the applicant's field of research and professional development. What basic ideas, problems, or questions do you examine in your project? Explain your planned approach or line of thought. The applicant's research experience pertinent to the project also should be described.
- Literature Review
A background to the proposal and a critical evaluation of existing knowledge should be briefly sketched. The importance of the proposed research and/or creative work should be related to the field of inquiry as well as the objectives of the applicant's research interests and professional development.
- Method
Appropriate procedures and methodology for carrying out the research project should be clearly articulated. Also, please indicate why the project design and procedures are appropriate for the proposed project.
- Timeline
What work will you accomplish during the award period? Supply a brief work plan.
- Plan for dissemination
Describe how the results of your proposed project will be presented to professional peers outside the University. That is, what are the intended results of your project? Indicate your plans for articles, conference papers, books, etc.
The Project Budget should provide estimated costs in the following categories as appropriate: materials, travel, student assistance, salary, and other. Note that according to IRS regulations, any LMU grant is considered taxable income and should be reported as such for the year it is received. It is unnecessary to provide the University with receipts of purchases related to the project. Please consult your tax advisor for further information and advice.
