Scholarships + Internships
Does LMU offer scholarships in the arts?
Yes! Each year the Department awards the Sharon Walter Memorial Scholarship Fund and more scholarships which are funded by The National Art Association (NAA). The scholarships are awarded to students majoring in Studio Art and Art History who have demonstrated superior academic or artistic achievements. There are some restrictions.

The CATS Scholarship Award for Incoming Freshmen
To qualify for consideration, a student must be an entering full-time student for the upcoming academic year majoring in Studio Arts or Art History, plus be eligible for financial aid. Monetary award, $2,000.
Application Process for Studio Arts Major:
1. Submit a portfolio (actual work or slides) of 15 works of art, and
2. Write an essay (approximately 500 words) about your work and the primary reasons for studying art at LMU and future career plans.
Application Process for Art History Major:
1. Submit a critical or research (5-10 page) paper related to art, and
2. Write a letter of intent stating primary reasons for studying art history at LMU and future career plans.
Deadline: October 31 of entering freshman year.
National Art Association Scholarship
Apply in October. Three to five student recipients in Studio Arts or Art History each year. Requirements: GPA minimum 3.0 plus eligibility for financial aid. Approximately $1,400.
Sharon Walter Memorial Scholarship
Apply in October. One student recipient in Studio Arts or Art History each year. Requirements: GPA minimum 3.0 plus eligibility for financial aid. Approximately $1,400.
CFA College Scholarship
Apply in April. One or more student recipients in Studio Arts or Art History each year. Requirements: GPA minimum 2.75 plus eligibility for financial aid. $1,000.
Academic Awards
Annual recognition given to graduating senior Studio Arts and Art History majors for outstanding academic and creative/scholarly performance.
Sister Regina Buchholz Award For Service
Presented to the graduating senior who has exhibited outstanding service to the Department of Art and Art History, the university, and the community at large while at LMU.
Genevieve Underwood, R.S.H.M. Perpetual Trophy For Outstanding Service
A perpetual trophy honoring deceased students and alumni, and presented annually to an underclassman who exhibits exemplary service to LMU and the community at large. Monetary award.
Andrea Kingaard Friedman Scholarship
Presented to an outstanding and deserving art student in honor of Genevieve Underwood, R.S.H.M. Monetary award.
Grace K. Swanson Awards of Distinction
For outstanding work in Art History and Studio Arts. Monetary award.
The Richards Family Scholarship
Presented to a talented, deserving, and service-oriented student. Monetary award.
LMU ARTsmart Citations
Presented to graduating seniors who have participated for two or more semesters in the LMU ARTsmart Community Service Project.
Scholars of Distinction
Presented to outstanding graduating seniors who have distinguished themselves in a particular medium.
Exhibition Awards
Presented for First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention entries in the Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition. The Laband Director's Award of Distinction, the Southern California Metal Arts Society award, and the Grace K. Swanson Awards of Distinction are also presented for outstanding work in the exhibition.
Springfest Poster Artist Award
Presented to the student artist selected to create the SPRINGFEST Poster. Competition for the award is announced in November each year, with entries due in February.
