Art History

The Art History major studies the meaning and purpose of the visual arts, its development through history, its role in society, and its relationship with other expressions of a culture. Through these studies the student gains a keen perception and understanding of art and its visual and symbolic language. A sampling of courses includes: Modernism, American, Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism, Contemporary, and the Arts of India, China, Japan, Zen, and Islam.

The program is enriched by the University’s location within one of the world’s most diverse and vital centers of art activity. The wealth of museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions in Southern California provides myriad occasions for direct experience of art, both at its traditional best and at its experimental frontier. It also provides abundant opportunities for internships and careers.
