Classes Offered in Studio Arts
STUDIO ARTS FOR NON-MAJORS (ART 150)
Open to non-studio Arts majors only. Exploration of the materials, techniques and inspiration of the artist in the media of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and two and three dimensional design.
DRAWING I (ART 153)
An introduction to drawing with emphasis on draftsmanship and the development of visual awareness. Experimentation and exploration of techniques using a variety of subject matter. Varied media, including pencil, charcoal, ink and crayon.
DRAWING II (ART 154)
Development of techniques and principles used in Drawing I, Art 153 with emphasis placed on working from the live model. Prerequisite: ART153
TWO DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (ART 160)
An introduction to the elements of art and the principles involved in their use in creative design.
PAINTING I (ART 257)
Study of basic painting methods and techniques as applied to both representational and abstract motives. Acrylic and/or oil paints utilized. Prerequisite: ART 153 or consent of instructor. Recommended: ART160
COMPUTER GRAPHICS I (ART 260)
Introduction to principles and practices of electronic imaging as they apply to graphics, art and design. Prerequisite: ART 160
THREE DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (ART 275)
Visual, participatory examination of the basic elements of design: line, plane, volume, mass, shape, form and color; various materials and tools are utilized. Prerequisite: ART 160 or consent of instructor.
CERAMICS I (ART 278)
Basic techniques of hand building and throwing on the potter's wheel integrated with aesthetic exploration through various projects.
PHOTOGRAPHY I (ART 280)
Photography as a medium of personal and artistic expression. Creativity is stressed. Camera, darkroom, and presentation fundamentals. Student must have a camera.
ADVANCED FIGURE COMPOSITION (ART 353)
Course promotes concept development and psychological possibilities inherent in the human form. Using a variety of media, it explores anatomical structure, imaginative composition and perspective. May be repeated for degree credit. Prerequisite: ART 153, 154, or consent of instructor.
PAINTING II (ART 356)
Emphasis on creative use of color, varied brushwork and compositional concepts. Subject matter includes still life, landscape, and the figure. Oil only. Prerequisite: ART 153, 154, 257. Recommend: ART 353.
PAINTING III (ART 358)
Emphasizing a creative exploration of contemporary concepts as applied to composition, color, non-objective and mixed media. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: 356
GRAPHIC DESIGN (ART 360)
The study of the design process and its conversion into graphic communicative forms. utilizing the computer. Prerequisite: ART 260 May be repeated twice for degree credit.
ADVERTISING DESIGN (ART 362)
Design concepts and applications specific to visual communications problems will be developed through class discussions and formal exercises in production techniques. May be repeated twice for degree credit with the consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 160, 360, 368, 369 or consent of instructor.
ILLUSTRATION (ART 365)
Drawing techniques applied to composite renderings including thumbnail roughs and comprehensive finished tights in black and white and in color. Exercises in rapid visualization, single line and patterns, and mechanical and perspective drawing. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 153,160
ADVANCED COMPUTER ARTS (ART 366)
Exploration of computer multimedia technologies with emphasis on the development of personal artistic expression. May be repeated twice for degree credit.
LETTERING AND LAYOUT (ART 368)
The techniques for the creation of letterforms and wordforms and an introduction to typographic principles including the study of the history of letterforms.
GRAPHIC PRODUCTION (ART 369)
Exploration of basic production processes and the development of advanced lettering skills with the emphasis on layout, inking, copy fitting, paste-up, camera-ready art production. Prerequisite: ART 160. May be repeated twice for degree credit.
COMPUTER ANIMATION (ART 371)
Introduction to art and technique of animated computer graphics. Prerequisite: ART 260.
JEWELRY I (ART 372)
Design and creation of jewelry.
JEWELRY II (ART 373)
Continuation of Art 372. Studio application of creative design to nonferrous precious metals and base metals, decorative techniques, and setting of stones. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 372.
FIGURE SCULPTURE (ART 375)
Modeling of the human figure with an emphasis on anatomy, leading to the extension of the figure as image. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor.
SCULPTURE WORKSHOP (ART 376)
Exploration of sculptural problems, techniques, and concepts using a variety of materials. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: Art 275, or consent of instructor.
DRAWING AND CLAY (ART 378)
Emphasis on the surface treatment of ceramic work incorporating drawing, painting, and printmaking techniques. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor.
PHOTOGRAPHY II (ART 380)
Exploration of advance concepts of photography as applied to the development of personal expression. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 280.
PRINTMAKING I (ART 385)
Introduction to the basic relief printmaking processes using object printing, linoleum blocks, wood blocks and collagraphs. Color techniques explored.
ITAGLIO-PRINTMAKING: ETCHING (ART 386)
Process using etching, aquatint and other incising techniques on metal plates. Emphasis on black and white images. Color techniques introduced. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Recommended: ART 153, 160.
SERIGRAPHY-PRINTMAKING: SILKSCREEN (ART 387)
Process using the silkscreen. An introduction to various stencils and block out methods. Emphasis on multicolor images. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Recommended: ART 160.
CERAMICS WORKSHOP (ART 478)
Design problems with ceramic materials incorporating wheel-thrown and hand building techniques. Development of a personal style in addition to advanced firing techniques. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 278, or consent of instructor.
COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY (ART 481)
Introduction to general color principles and lab procedures. Emphasis on personal expression. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 280.
ADVANCED PRINTMAKING (ART 485)
Continuation and more advanced work in Relief, Intaglio or Serigraphy techniques. May be repeated for degree credit with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: ART 385 or 386 or 387.
ADVANCED STUDIO STUDIES (ART 495)
Pre-professional directed study in studio art. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. May be repeated three times for degree credit.
