Professor Edley teaches organizational communication, gender and the workplace, and qualitative research methods. Her research interests include the intersections of power, gender, and identity in organizations, alternative forms of organizing, work-life balance, and women-owned businesses. She has published multiple book chapters on home-based businesses, women-owned businesses, corporate colonization of the body in international ballet companies, and the use of technology in work-family balance. Her research has been published in such prestigious journals as Management Communication Quarterly (for which she received the Outstanding Published Article Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender), Communication Yearbook, Electronic Journal of Communication, Women and Language, Argumentation and Advocacy, etc. She also has served two elected terms as member of the Executive Board of the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender. She has served as reviewer for several academic journals, including Management Communication Quarterly, the Electronic Journal of Communication, Women and Language, Communication Studies, and the Journal of Family Communication, as well as reviewer for conference papers submitted to the International Communication Association (ICA), the National Communication Association (NCA), and the Central States Communication Association (CSCA).

In addition, Dr. Edley is committed to issues of social justice and tries to blend activism with her teaching and scholarship. She has participated in local, regional, and national protests of sexist, racist, and greedy organizational practices, including the FTAA protest in Miami, the Taco Bell Truth Tour protesting exploitation of migrant workers, the New Century Campaign on Century Boulevard outside LAX Airport, as well as campus-wide rallies supporting the presentation of the Vagina Monologues and supporting a zero tolerance of racism and sexism on campus.
