Referral Policy and Application Process
Graduate Department of Marital and Family Therapy
Loyola Marymount University

Dear Art Therapy Colleague,

The Graduate Department of Marital and Family Therapy has been thoughtfully considering our three referral processes: for the students’ psychotherapy requirement, for the public interested in art therapy practitioners, and for MFTH graduates looking for art therapy supervision. This letter addresses all three of those referral practices, articulating clarified policies and inviting your participation. This summer we will be retiring our current referral lists and creating new ones with the information you submit in response to this letter. If you have been on any of our referral lists, you will still need to submit an application.

1. Referrals for Psychotherapy for Current MFTH Students

We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to recommend art therapists in private practice to meet the students’ required engagement in personal psychotherapy. It has been our observation that students who have the opportunity to experience art therapy as clients have unparalleled opportunities to learn about the work they intend to do from a very unique and valuable perspective. We look forward to continuing with this process in a careful and comprehensive manner:

Art therapists in private practice are welcome to apply to be on our list of referrals that we give out to students when they begin the program. Eligibility is based on the submission of the application form with a copy of your license, a copy of your malpractice insurance and a commitment to offer sliding scale fees. However, it is our decision that any art therapist who is a currently contracted member of the faculty is ineligible for listing on this referral list for students. It is extremely important that we all model careful vigilance regarding multiple relationships and we want our department policy to embody this ethical approach. Click here for this application.  Print and mail the application and documents no later than August 1, 2007 to:

Dept. of Marital and Family Therapy
Loyola Marymount University
1 LMU Drive, Suite 2518
Los Angeles, CA 90045

Once we have received the documents listed above we will invite you to attend a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, August 7th at 7 p.m. to discuss the nuances of this referral process and the guidelines for participation. Attendance at this meeting will be a requirement for inclusion.

2. Referral for Psychotherapy for the General Public

We are pleased to help promote your practice when we get calls from the public asking for referrals for art therapy.

Art therapists in private practice are welcome to apply to be on our list of referrals that we give out to public callers. Eligibility is based on the submission the application form with a copy of your license, a copy of your malpractice insurance, a statement of your treatment philosophy, a list of specializations and an indication of your fee scale.

Once we have received the documents listed above we will add your name and contact information to our binder of private practice referrals.   Click here for this application. Please print it and send it to the same address as stated in the first section.

3. Referrals for Art Therapy Supervision of LMU MFT Alumnae

We want to help our recent graduates connect with the wider world of art therapy and hope that we can refer them to your service as art therapy supervisors.

Art therapists who are registered with AATA and/or licensed in the State of California for at least two years, may apply to be on our list of post-graduate supervisors. Eligibility is based on the submission of the application form (Insert link to online form) with a copy of your registration and license, as well as a summary of the supervision you have provided for both trainees and interns.

Once we have received the documents listed above we will add your name and contact information to our binder of supervision referrals.    Click here for this application.  Please print it and send it to the same address as stated in the first section.

We hope to hear from you and join with you in this ever widening circle of art therapy services.

With our best wishes for meaningful and successful experiences in your professional lives,
