Major Requirements: Lower Division

26-27 semester hours

DANC 100: Orientation to Dance
An introduction to the discipline of Dance for Dance majors. This course addresses: careers, health, wellness, performance, community service, and community resources.

DANC 101: Principles of Movement
Orientation to use of breath, alignment, and basic principles of motion. Exploration of the body-mind connection.

DANC 160: Fundamentals of Dance Composition I
Principles of composition in relation to time, force, space, and kinesthesia. Groundwork in aesthetics and composition theory. Must be taken with one technique class.

DANC 161: Fundamentals of Dance Composition II
Continuation of DANC 160.

DANC 183:Stagecraft for Dancers
Introduction to basic principles of lighting, costuming, and production management.

DANC 260: Laban Movement Analysis
Study of Rudolph Laban's method of systematic description of qualitative change in movement. Application in choreography, in teaching and in learning movement.

DANC 262: Dance Styles and Forms
Exploration of dance composition based on styles of noted choreographers. Study of dance forms. Theory and practice as modes of study.

DANC 281: History of Dance Theatre
A study of dance development as an art form from earliest origins, through medieval religious pageantry, Renaissance court dances, 18th century stage dance, and culminating with dance in the 19th and 20th centuries. Evolution of ballet and modern dance forms in Europe and America.

In addition, taken for at least 4 semester hours and at the level of proficiency: Modern Dance and Ballet each semester for 0-2 semester hours, and one semester of World Dance taken for 0-2 semester hours.
