Prof. Lavick ("call me Howard") is no stranger to Communication Arts Department students. Deeply involved in film production and post production, he is likely to be found in his office, on the sound stage, or in the darkness, hunched over some editing equipment, helping to supervise a production, trim a few frames from a yard of film, or counsel a young writer or director in the intricacies of story structure.

He graduated with a BA in photojournalism from the University of Minnesota, and was immediately offered the opportunity to practice his skills...complements of the U.S. Army. He served as a combat photographer for the Pacific Stars and Stripes in Vietnam, which Prof. Lavick found at once to be both an awful and invigorating life experience.

After leaving the Army, he moved to Los Angeles and earned an MFA in Film Production from the University of Southern California. His thesis film, The 480 Experience, was selected to screen in the prestigious Los Angeles FILMEX Festival and has been included in the permanent collection of the USC Cinema Library.

In 1985, Prof. Lavick's screenplay, Torch, was bought by PEN Entertainment. In 1992, he edited Picture This, a Showtime Network documentary about Peter Bogdanovich and the cast of The Last Picture Show.

In addition to his teaching duties at LMU, which include supervising some 200 student productions every year, Prof. Lavick maintains an active professional schedule. He is currently a freelance editor, writer, and producer. Other credits include:
