Art Nomura has worked in expressive media of all types including painting, ceramics, sculpture, film, and video since 1968. His independent productions include fictional narratives and documentaries, dance and music videos, and video art. Many of his works have themes directly connected to the Asian American experience. All are influenced by his experience growing up and living as a Japanese American. Video honors include a Gold Award from the Houston Worldfest for Lotusland; Best Drama Pilot, and a Best Experimental Documentary (Honorable Mention) Award from the Atlanta Film Video Festival for his documentary on racism, Getting Along. Seascape, a dance video, and Wok Like A Man, a music video documentary, have toured galleries and museums worldwide. He was a contributing artist to Home, an interactive website created by Annette Barbier and Drew Browning. He has received production awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Los Angeles. He has been nominated for two regional Emmy awards for Arts and Culture programs.Nomura has taught video/TV/film production throughout Southern California since 1981. From 1981-1985 he co-managed the Video Annex of the Long Beach Museum of Art, and from 1985 -1990 he directed the Video Arts program at the University of California, Irvine. He has been on the faculty of LMU since 1990. During that time, Nomura has also taught film/TV production, screenwriting, computer animation, and film history in Portugal, Italy, and Germany.In 2003, Nomura received a Fulbright Research Grant to produce a documentary about Japanese Americans who have chosen to live in Japan entitled, Finding Home. It has been an official selection of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the Dallas Video Fest, the DisOrient Film Festival and in the 2007 Fukuoka Asian Film Festival in Fukuoka, Japan. Work currently in progress includes What Goes Around Comes Around, a multi-monitor media installation that explores the cyclical nature of life.
