Center for Ignatian Spirituality
Coming Events for Faculty and Staff
For more than a year, Fr. Herb Ryan, Professor Emeritus of Theological Studies at LMU, has been sending email replies to theological or religious questions submitted by faculty and staff.
Ask Fr. Herbie is the name of this service offered through Fr. Ryan's association with the Center for Ignatian Spirituality. Fr. Ryan has a great facility for providing carefully considered pastoral answers to questions that faculty and staff send to him, questions that might not seem appropriate in a group or conversational setting, but questions of personal significance that have to do with religion and theology. A written question, submitted by email, allows time for a thoughtful response. Please contact Fr. Ryan at hryan@lmu.edu.
Open House at the Center for Ignatian Spirituality
Thursday, August 30, noon to 1:00 pm.
As the new semester begins, we invite you to take a few moments to visit the Center, and share some pizza and cool beverages while you visit with other members of the faculty and staff.
The beginning of the academic year is a rather intense time for faculty and staff, as well as for students. Our presence to one another is not only enjoyable, but a realistic form of support for our work together.

"My Close Friend"
Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 3:00pm McIntosh Room, UH 3999.
A presentation by Terrance Mahan, SJ, about Pedro Arrupe, SJ, the Superior General of the Jesuits (1965-1983,) whose birth centenary is celebrated on this day.
A reception with light refreshments will follow.
Fr. Arrupe was the first Basque to serve as Superior General since the founder of the Jesuits, St. Ignatius of Loyola, whom he resembled both physically and spiritually.
While Fr. Arrupe was a missionary in Japan, he was imprisoned for a time at the beginning of WWII, and later acknowledged by the military as a true friend of the Japanese people. He was on the outskirts of Hiroshima when the atomic bomb struck, and used his pre-med training to help many of the victims. He was the Superior General of the Jesuits during the years of Vatican II, and led the renewal of the Jesuits, especially the vital recovery of The Spiritual Exercises as lay spirituality as well as the foundational experience of Jesuits.
Our presenter, Fr. Terrance Mahan, SJ, was dean of the College of Arts and Science (1960-69), and later, the Provincial of the California Province of Jesuits. As Provincial, he met with Fr. Arrupe a number of times. Fr. Mahan was present at the Jesuit Congregation meeting in Rome in 1983 when the Jesuits accepted Fr. Arrupe's resignation as Superior General because he had suffered an incapacitating stroke.
